General Summary Emergency physicians provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages arriving to the emergency department. Their primary job functions are to resuscitate or stabilize patients and refer them to the appropriate medical departments. Emergency physicians collaborate with physicians of other specialties as well as other members of the emergency department staff. Emergency physicians must evaluate a wide variety of ailments, sometimes with little to no information. They must be able to think and act quickly to make a tentative diagnosis and determine the appropriate course of treatment.
Responsibilities
Carry out immediate evaluation and management of emergency patients that are brought in for treatment.
Evaluate patient to determine the patient’s condition in an efficient and productive manner so as to maintain the flow of the department.
Request appropriate medical tests and based on them, follow a treatment plan.
Develop effective patient care plans.
Refer patients to the appropriate specialists.
Ensure that patients are stable before transferring them to the proper department for further evaluation.
Provide instructions for discharge and any relevant paperwork, including prescriptions.
Maintain the patient’s medical records.
Coordinate with different departments to ensure patients receive the necessary treatment.
Complete patient charts in EPIC within 72 hours of seeing patient.
Review and co‑sign charts received from the APC within 72 hours of receiving the chart.
Provide monthly schedule availability within time frame established.
Maintain licenses, required certificates and education; including Bayhealth annual education.
Review all medical (laboratory and radiology) reports concerning patients.
Should attend staff and committee meetings unless working, post night or late evening shifts or have an excused absence.
All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience
Education: Doctor of Medicine; Completion of Emergency Medicine Residency.
Credential(s): Board Certified in Emergency Medicine; Physician MD; DEA Diversion Control Division; Physician - Controlled Substance Registration Or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) licensure.
