Island Health In the Cardiac Sonographer role, you will play a key role in the department, ensuring a full range of non‑invasive cardiac diagnostic ultrasound procedures with a high level of skill, accuracy, and professionalism. This role functions as an experienced cardiac sonographer, performing echocardiographic studies independently with minimal supervision, in accordance with current standards of care, ASE guidelines, Joint Commission standards, and Island Hospital policies and procedures. The position provides age‑specific, patient‑centered care and serves as a professional resource to physicians, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team.

$51.61/hr – $76.93/hr

What You Will Be Doing

Perform a full range of echocardiographic studies as ordered by physicians, including but not limited to transthoracic echocardiograms (2-D, M-Mode, Color Flow Doppler), transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), exercise and pharmacologic stress echocardiography, in accordance with departmental standards and physician guidelines.

Verify patient identity, physician orders, and informed consent prior to procedures, adhering to patient safety and regulatory requirements.

Assume responsibility for patient safety, comfort, and monitoring throughout diagnostic procedures, including proper positioning and observation for changes in patient condition.

Acquire high‑quality stress echocardiography and Dobutamine images that meet benchmark standards, with post‑exercise image acquisition completed within established timeframes.

Assist cardiologists during echocardiographic procedures, including transesophageal echocardiograms, ensuring optimal imaging quality and patient safety.

Accurately document preliminary findings, measurements, procedural details, and patient information in the electronic medical record and other required systems.

Communicate pertinent clinical information, observations, or patient condition changes to cardiologists and appropriate care team members to support timely interpretation and care decisions.

Prepare, operate, and maintain ultrasound equipment, supplies, and work areas to ensure readiness, cleanliness, and compliance with infection control standards.

Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with infection prevention practices, including aseptic techniques and equipment disinfection.

Complete required annual training, competencies, and continuing education units in a timely manner to maintain clinical proficiency and credentials.

Participate in on‑call, weekend, or holiday coverage as required based on departmental needs.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Cardiologist or Director of Diagnostic Imaging.

What You Will Bring To The Role

Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills consistent with Island Hospital’s mission, vision, values, and Promise.

Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.

Proficiency in echocardiographic imaging techniques, image optimization, and quantitative measurements.

Ability to safely and effectively operate ultrasound equipment while adhering to patient safety and infection control standards.

High level of analytical and critical‑thinking skills to obtain diagnostically appropriate images and measurements per physician and ASE guidelines.

Competence in providing age‑specific care, adapting communication and imaging techniques to meet the physical, emotional, and cognitive needs of patients across the lifespan.

Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems for documentation and reporting.

Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment and build positive working relationships with physicians, clinicians, leaders, and staff.

Demonstrated commitment to patient‑centered care, service excellence, and compassionate communication with patients and families.

Your Qualifications

Minimum of two years of hands‑on echocardiography experience preferred, including stress echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound Program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree required).

In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma or equivalent with applicable, demonstrated echocardiography experience may be considered.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential through ARDMS required.
