Assistant Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (Part‑Time)
City Of Statesville is hiring an Assistant Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (Part‑Time) to plan, coordinate, and implement a variety of programs and activities for individuals with disabilities.
Salary: $14.71 - $24.27 per hour. FLSA Position Class: Non‑Exempt. Work Schedule: Varies (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. with occasional weekends). Posting Closing Date: February 11, 2026 (or until filled).
Job Overview This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a variety of programs and activities for individuals with disabilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides support to the Special Olympics Iredell County (SOIC) coordinator.
Facilitates participation for all citizens with disabilities within a designated geographic area in the local SOIC programs.
Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteers involved in SOIC sports, competitions, and additional programs.
Ensures volunteers receive proper training and submits necessary screening documentation to Special Olympics North Carolina.
Coordinates the scheduling of facilities for sports events, competitions, and other activities; enforces rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline during events.
Upholds the mission and objectives of Special Olympics Incorporated and North Carolina, ensuring adherence to their policies and procedures.
Maintains accurate records and submits all required documentation promptly to the appropriate authorities.
Operates the activity van for various events as needed.
Responds to inquiries received via social media and local communication channels.
Manages the SOIC Instagram account.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or GED.
Six (6) months of experience volunteering or working with Special Olympics.
Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid driver’s license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
Attend the new coordinator orientation training provided by Special Olympics North Carolina and attendance at the Annual Leadership Conference within 12 months of hire date.
Job Related Physical Requirements This position involves medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Physical activity may require the use of fingers and hands, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required. Hearing and visual acuity are required for operation of machines or equipment and preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
Working Conditions The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat, humidity, noise, and hazards including proximity to moving equipment. Employees could be exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials.
