This position provides routine and emergency medical care, on‑call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of offenders in a correctional clinical setting.
Responsibilities (will include but not limited to)
Conducting medical/physical examinations.
Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosing medical conditions.
Prescribing medications and treatment.
Educating patients about preventive health care.
Ensuring minor medical procedures are performed on‑site.
Providing medical services to a daily patient caseload including chronic care, sick call, emergencies, and routine physicals.
Participating in the on‑call schedule and providing on‑site assistance to other DOC clinical units and facilities when staffing needs arise.
Providing instruction, demonstration and training to other health care professionals.
Providing medical advice to other organizational units or health care specialties through consultation regarding patients or protocols.
Ensuring computer data entry, referrals, consultations, medical reporting, co‑signature and grievance requirements are completed per DOC policies and clinical standards.
Maintaining problem lists and M‑Code ratings in offenders' health records, applying and updating housing and work restrictions, obtaining authorization for consultations, diagnostics, and surgeries.
Attending quarterly medical review board meetings, monthly physician meetings, and other division meetings as assigned.
Licenses and Certification
Applicant must be licensed to practice as a Physician’s Assistant or Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of South Dakota as outlined by the appropriate regulating board.

Knowledgeable in full‑spectrum primary care.
Skilled in office‑based procedures.
Maintain professionalism in a complex environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to read and comprehend English.
Ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain‑language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment.
Experience in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a mid‑level provider.
Conditions of Employment The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen (UDS), and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Individuals selected will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) with required training. Applicants must successfully complete a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines including the written exam and hands‑on portion.
TB screening is required of all new employees upon hire. Individuals MUST be physically able to complete the practical self‑defense exam demonstrating specified exercises.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act and eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08. Successful applicant(s) will undergo background investigation and drug screening.
