Summary Whatcom County is recruiting for the position of Park Ranger in the Parks & Recreation Department. This position provides Park Ranger duties for park locations within the East Region with the primary responsibility focused on Silver Lake Park.

Primary Duties

Assisting with general operations at parks, park facilities, and trails in assigned area.

Maintaining, inspecting and ensuring facilities and grounds are in compliance with current standards and regulations.

Assisting and answering questions from the public, promoting interest and use of park facilities, and facilitating special events and activities.

Enforcing safety and security policies.

Performing landscaping, trails, and facilities maintenance including basic plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs.

Collecting and accounting for fees, revenues and sales of concessions, rentals and program registrations.

Work Schedule Our parks are open every day, all year round. This position is therefore subject to an open work week schedule, which means the hours and days of regular shifts may vary and typically include weekends and holidays.

Hours of Work Monday – Friday 8 AM – 5 PM

Salary Range $30.31 – $43.66 (2025 MCBA- Range 150.0). Hiring rate depends on qualifications and receives annual pay increases to the next step in the salary range (approximately 3.8%), subject to satisfactory performance and any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). As a public entity and in a union‑covered position, wages are set by experience, qualifications, and equity with other employees.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation or a related field, and two years of progressively responsible experience in public contact and park operations, maintenance, and management.

Must have a driving record that meets County standards and possess a valid driver's license.

Must be eligible to cross between the United States and Canada.

The ideal candidate will be a highly‑motivated, creative self‑starter who takes pride in their work and in the work of their teammates, has a strong work ethic and experience working with the public, and would enjoy the challenge of assisting with general operations and maintenance at multiple park locations throughout Whatcom County.
