Job Summary

The Admission Counselor/Assistant Director will build and execute, in consultation with Enrollment leadership, an effective strategy to recruit first‑year students from an assigned geographic territory to support broader enrollment objectives. The Admission Counselor/Assistant Director will report to the Director of Admission or Associate Director. This position is defined as an exempt position.

Specific Responsibilities

Serve as a member of the Admission Team managing a recruitment territory to achieve enrollment goals for the University.

Implement recruitment strategies as outlined in the admissions plan in the assigned territory to include high school and community college visits, attend college fairs, area receptions, and events.

Provide follow‑up to students and parents via phone, text message, letters, email, and scheduled appointments in specific recruitment territory.

Review applications for admission and scholarship.

Conduct admission presentations and interviews to visitors during on‑campus and off‑campus events.

Advise students and families of admission requirements, process guidelines, financial aid, scholarship information, academic programs, residence life, etc.

Complete routine reports related to recruitment, projections, personal schedule, travel, special programs, and professional development.

Work with current students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders that assist with the recruitment of students.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree required.

Experience

Admission Counselor consideration: No previous admission experience is required.

Assistant Director consideration: Previous admission experience required, three (3) years strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to work independently, develop and execute a recruiting plan, demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication, possess strong organizational skills, and the sensitivity and responsiveness to build effective recruiting relationships with a diverse constituency.

Ability to set priorities and work collaboratively within a high‑functioning team. Demonstrated ability to think critically and initiate and implement projects independently.

Knowledge of Susquehanna University and the value of a liberal arts education.

Communicate effectively over the phone and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people and commitment to diversity.

Willingness and ability to learn how to use complex software.

Skilled at formal presentation to small and large groups.

Ability to converse with applicants and parents to determine what they are really looking for in their college experience, to portray Susquehanna as a great fit (assuming it is), and the capacity to secure the enrollment deposit.

Knowledge of appropriate sales strategies and yield activities in the recruitment process; knowledge of and ability to use a variety of social media platforms.

Willingness to travel and work a varied schedule including nights and weekends.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel, ability to represent the office and the University in a professional manner.

This position requires a valid driver’s license, and the ability to drive and qualify under the university’s insurance carrier when driving a university and/or leased vehicle.

Physical Demand

Position requires occasional manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach.
