Why You’ll Love This Position The traffic signal and lighting technician performs duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, communications equipment, and other electronic devices under direct supervision.

What You’ll Do

Assist on emergency calls related to malfunctioning equipment and traffic crashes involving traffic control devices.

Assist in investigating customer service reports on signal and lighting operations and report findings.

Respond to routine utility locate requests from Missouri One Call.

Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, radio communication equipment, ITS, roadway, aviation and navigational lighting, and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.

Assist in interpreting signal circuit plans and schematics for troubleshooting electronic/electrical components.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED/HiSET and completion of a formal post‑secondary technical program (electrical, electronics, or networking, minimum 30 credit hours) or completion of both phases of the department’s traffic signal and lighting apprenticeship program (internal only).

One year of signal and lighting field experience.

Passing written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam; must pass the driving portion with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (Either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non‑Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days after hire.

Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.

Special Working Conditions

Heavy physical exertion and effort, including moving materials by hand, operating hand tools, and performing stationary flagging.

Exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse environmental characteristics.

Work at heights requiring fall protection and aerial boom equipment.

Operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials may be required.
