Library Circulation Desk Assistant – VEML
Description:
The Library Circulation Desk Assistant is a 16‑hour per week position at $10.00/hour located at 605 North Street, Ashburn. Applicants are requested to submit a resume and application in person at the library or via email to the Branch Manager, Christy Casimiro (ccasimiro@cprl.org). The anticipated start date is late January or early February, with interviews scheduled for mid‑January.
Responsibilities:
The assistant will assist patrons with technology needs, reference requests, book location, and circulation tasks. Additional duties include: managing the library’s social media accounts; creating graphics and captions for Facebook and Instagram; taking photographs for promotions; maintaining collections; answering phones; and performing general clerical and custodial tasks.
Process and maintain collections including periodicals, laptops, launchpads, partner passes, and other items.
Assist users in locating desired library materials in the building or by intra‑library loan, and refer them to appropriate resources.
Enter and update patrons’ records on computers.
Instruct patrons on how to use reference sources, e‑resources, and automated information systems.
Use tact and sensitivity when dealing with all patrons and in all situations.
Educate the public on library programs, resources and events.
Read shelves on a regular basis to keep materials in correct order.
Perform clerical duties such as sorting mail, answering phones, filing, photocopying, and word‑processing.
Maintain the cleanliness of the library including light dusting and hoovering.
Create and schedule posts and events for Facebook and Instagram.
Manage content for the in‑house media marketing display.
Design simple graphics to promote library programs.
Take photographs of new books and library events for promotional use.
Adhere to library policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
Excellent oral and written communication, reading and listening skills.
Avid reader comfortable with readers’ advisory skills.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers, and the general public.
Extremely tech‑savvy and familiar with PINES library catalog.
Both self‑directed and able to work in a team environment.
Familiarity with Turner County and/or the Ashburn community.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to type accurately, operate photocopier, fax machine, microfilm machine, cash register and computer.
Strong proficiency with technology and social media.
Experience working with children.
Excellent customer‑service skills.
Dependable, highly organized, and strong sense of responsibility.
Working Environment The Library provides a vibrant, welcoming public space with a temperature‑controlled environment. Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of books; balancing while carrying and shelving; frequent stooping, kneeling and crouching; and fine finger dexterity.
