Duties Description
Establish a relationship of professionalism, confidence, safety, and trust with youth and other staff from diverse backgrounds.
Supervise and monitor youth, including 1-to-1 supervision when needed.
Actively participate as a member of a youth’s support team, addressing emotional and behavioral needs.
Engage individuals under physical and/or emotional stress confidently.
Employ graduated harm reduction strategies while supervising, including intervention for unsafe behaviors.
Collaborate and stay informed to improve the facility community’s well‑being.
Supervise and assist youth during recreation, education activities, and various assignments.
Maintain positive, professional relationships with youths’ families and loved ones.
Assist youth in achieving education, work readiness, and community transition goals.
Additional duties will be discussed in detail during the interview.
Training Requirements
Attend a 2‑week Juvenile Justice Basic Training orientation.
Proficiency in OCFS-approved physical skills and youth restraint techniques (bi‑annual 8‑hour training).
Complete NYS employee‑mandated annual trainings and other refresher trainings.
Travel may be required for supervision at medical appointments, intramural games, extracurricular activities, or other events.
Position is physically demanding; ability to use physical restraint techniques required.
Position requires shift, weekend, holiday, and overtime assignments (mandatory and voluntary).
Minimum Qualifications Two years full‑time direct care experience with youth ages 6‑21, or:
High school graduation or equivalency diploma + one year direct care experience, or
Associate’s degree + six months experience, or
Associate’s or higher degree with appropriate part‑time experience prorated.
Direct care experience with youth involved in the juvenile justice system or relevant institutions (e.g., camp, school, community center, mental health program, residential center).
