Job Title: Heat Treat Lab Technician
Location: MNP, Utica, Michigan
Schedule: Mon – Fri & weekends, 5:00 AM – 5:00 PM; rotational shifts A & B (Monday/Tuesday off/on, Wednesday/Thursday off/on, Friday‑Sunday off/on).

Role Overview The Heat Treat Lab Technician supports the Quality division by performing fastener inspections and performance testing for various metallurgical and fastener test methods. The Technician maintains all records and enables the laboratory to function effectively and in accordance with all quality criteria. Attention to detail and familiarity with fastener quality requirements are essential for success.
Responsibilities
Metallurgical analysis of samples (core hardness, surface hardness, microhardness (Vickers)), evaluate samples for carbon pickup & de‑carb, and structure review for martensite and bainite as required.
Review all processed products on a per‑order basis for conformance to destructive and non‑destructive requirements and standards.
Use a Carbon Analyzer to determine and confirm carbon potential set points within operational standards for austenizing furnace quality using shim material.
Use a Tensile Tester to collect ultimate tensile strength values and report on test certificates.
Verify lab testing equipment daily using calibrated standards for Rockwell hardness (HRC), superficial hardness (HR15N) and microhardness (HV); monitor and report test environments (temperature & humidity).
Review furnace control points (hardening, tempering, quench) on a per‑order basis to ensure quality conformance with awareness of key product characteristics.
Participate in continuous improvement activities; collaborate with managers and supervisors to communicate operational issues.
Conduct root‑cause analysis of non‑conforming or suspect parts.
Qualifications
Experience in cold forming and thread rolling.
Knowledge of macro/microhardness testing and required sample preparation (mounting, sectioning, etching).
Familiarity with fastener quality requirements, strength classifications, and thread classifications.
Knowledge of carbon‑based steel (1010‑5039).
Knowledge of factors for key part characteristics in relation to furnace operations.
Intermediate computer skills, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Strong problem‑solving skills.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Highly organized and capable of managing time wisely.
Ability to keep records and complete documentation as needed.
