Job Summary
Apprentice Driver Residential – Join the WM team to learn safe commercial driving and become a full‐time driver. The apprentice will complete training under a seasoned WM Driver or Driver Trainer and operate a commercial refuse/recycling vehicle.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate vehicle in accordance with WM Safety & Life Critical Rules, OSHA and DOT requirements and all applicable local, state and federal laws.
Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections and document checks using the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
Immediately report all unsafe situations or service‑related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Operations Manager.
Work closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
Notify Operations Manager of incidents, accidents, injuries or property damage.
Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager.
Completely dump all receptacles, leaving the location clean and debris‑free.
Follow route assignments, complete end‑of‑day documentation and check‑out process.
Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
While on route, load and empty residential/commercial containers, manually or mechanically, and assist with backing maneuvers.
Operate hoisting devices and lift bins or containers into the truck hopper as required.
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old.
Legally eligible to work in the United States.
Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Successfully complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
Current state‑issued standard Driver’s License.
Education: No college education required.
Experience: No previous experience required.
Work Environment
Work primarily outdoors and/or driving a vehicle.
Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity for most of the workday.
Physical effort in handling objects up to 50–70 lbs occasionally.
Exposure to dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes and occasional occupational risks.
