$19.00/hr – $23.00/hr (Position not eligible for benefits)

Job Summary The Assistant Preschool Teacher at Occidental College Child Development Center collaborates with Lead Preschool Teachers to implement a play-based, developmentally-appropriate curriculum that addresses the whole child for children aged 2-5 years old. The role involves fostering a safe, respectful, and community-oriented classroom environment, forming nurturing relationships with children, and maintaining open communication with parents. The Assistant Preschool Teacher must work effectively within a team of early childhood educators and establish respectful partnerships with parents.

Job Duties

Child Supervision and Care – Provide constant supervision of children, ensuring safety and well‑being. (Essential, 35%)

Collaborate on Curriculum Development – Work closely with Lead Preschool Teachers to plan and implement a developmentally‑appropriate, play‑based curriculum. (Marginal, 15%)

Relationship Building and Communication – Form close, nurturing relationships with children, establish collaborative partnerships with parents, and maintain open communication. (Essential, 20%)

Assist in General Classroom and Center‑wide Duties – Share responsibility for classroom and center‑wide duties, assist teachers and children, respond to direction, and perform routine paperwork, medication administration, and support for substitutes. (Essential, 20%)

Documentation of Children’s Learning and Development – Observe and document children’s growth using notes, photos, or the Learning Genie app, and share with Lead Teachers. (Marginal, 5%)

Professional Development – Engage in ongoing professional growth through workshops, seminars, and additional ECE/CD courses. (Marginal, 5%)

Minimum Qualifications

12 semester units in Child Development, including core courses: Child Growth & Development, Child, Family & Community, and Curriculum Planning for young children.

3 months of experience in a play‑based early childhood education setting.

Understanding of basic Child Development theories and current best practices.

Familiarity with play‑based, emergent curriculum models.

Knowledge of the Center’s educational philosophy.

Familiarity with Title 22 Regulations.

Ability to complete routine paperwork procedures (e.g., accident/incident reports, sign‑in/out, emergency contact, medication administration).

Ability to collaborate with Lead Teachers in implementing curriculum.

Skill in providing educational activities based on children’s interests and needs.

Good observational and assessment skills for children aged two to five.

Documentation skills for recording observations.

Clear, effective, and professional communication in English.

Interpersonal skills to work effectively with children, parents, and coworkers.

Flexibility to assist in all Center activities, cover other classrooms as needed.

Supervisory ability to ensure safety and well‑being of children.

Ability to adapt curriculum and expectations based on individual children’s needs.

Ability to create and maintain a safe, inviting classroom environment.

Professionalism and ethical conduct; maintain confidentiality; refrain from unprofessional behavior.

Physical capability to lift children up to 50 pounds and engage in play.

Maintain a physically healthy condition.

Punctuality, dependability, and responsibility.

Completion of certifications: Mandated Reporter Training, criminal background check, health screening, TB test, required immunizations, CPR/First Aid Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

18 or more units in Child Development, with required core courses.

1+ years of experience in a play‑based early childhood education setting, preferably with an emergent curriculum.
