Job Summary The Patient Services Specialist I creates a positive patient experience by consistently exceeding expectations in customer service and patient care, by coordinating clerical and medical activities of a healthcare team, patient registration activities, and facilitating access to UTMB services for new and returning patients.
Essential Job Functions
Provides high level customer service in all interactions with internal and external customers.
Answers calls accurately and with exceptional customer service at all times.
Ensures caller's needs are met and accurate information is obtained.
Documents and triages calls, maintaining patient satisfaction and safety.
Acts as patient advocate and liaisons with various departments to meet mutual goals.
Maintains patient confidentiality regarding access to patient and other clinical information.
Addresses concerns, provides service recovery, and escalates issues as needed.
Schedules appointments, coordinates financial counseling, and completes reminder calls.
Educates patients on billing processes and third‑party benefits.
Pre‑registers patients, obtains patient demographics and third‑party coverage, ensuring compliance with Medicare and other requirements.
Fully discharges patients within the designated timeline and adheres to internal controls.
Implements knowledge, skills, and abilities including PC proficiency, analytical skills, and excellent communication.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree and no prior experience required; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
Preferred: Medical office or OB/GYN experience.
Certification: Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire, maintained throughout employment.
Proficient in PC use with Excel, Word, and database packages.
Working Conditions
Standard hospital, clinical, and office environments.
Standard office equipment.
On-site, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
