Drafter / Detailer, Six Side Supply The Drafter/Detailer at Six Side Supply is responsible for preparing detailed fabrication and shop drawings for a variety of miscellaneous metals projects including stairs, railings, platforms, embeds, and custom fabrications. This role supports project execution by translating architectural and structural drawings into precise, field‑ready documents for shop and site use. In periods of reduced drafting workload, this role will assist the Estimating team with quantity takeoffs, pricing exercises, and bid documentation.

Qualifications Required

Associate degree or certificate in drafting, design, or construction technology & four (4) years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree

2+ years of detailing experience (preferred in steel or metals industry)

Proficient in AutoCAD (2D) and/or 3D modeling tools such as Tekla, SDS/2

Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and fabrication drawings

Familiarity with AISC detailing standards and typical field tolerances

Preferred

Experience producing shop and erection drawings for stair systems, rails, embeds, and other metal assemblies

Experience with fabrication workflows and shop/field coordination

Exposure to estimating takeoffs and bid preparation

Bachelor’s degree in construction technology or related field

4+ years of detailing experience (preferred in steel or metals industry)

Office and Travel Works in White Bear Lake, MN office with periodic regional travel.

Responsibilities and Tasks Fabrication & Shop Drawing Production (70%)

Prepare detailed 2D and/or 3D fabrication drawings in accordance with contract documents and industry standards

Develop part drawings, weld symbols, and cut lists for shop use

Generate erection and installation drawings for field crews

Coordinate drawings with PMs, engineers, fabricators, and installers to resolve conflicts

Revise drawings as needed based on RFI responses, redlines, or design changes

Maintain drawing logs and revision control standards

Submit drawings for approval and track status through final signoff

Estimating Support (20%)

Perform quantity takeoffs from architectural and structural drawings

Assist in developing material lists, labor hour projections, and vendor quote requestsOrganize scope breakdowns and document assumptions in support of bids

Help identify drawing clarifications or RFIs for pre‑bid review

Coordination & Communication (5%)

Attend project kickoff and coordination meetings as needed

Communicate effectively with PMs and fabrication personnel to clarify design intent

Support shop and field questions

General & Team Support (5%)

Support detailing standardization and template development

Assist with file archiving and project documentation closeout

Participate in professional development and Lean initiatives within the company

Technical Competencies

Construction Document Interpretation: Ability to accurately read and interpret architectural, structural, and fabrication drawings, specifications, and contract documents.

Drafting & Detailing Expertise: Proficient in producing precise 2D and/or 3D shop, fabrication, and erection drawings using AutoCAD, Tekla, SDS/2, or similar tools.

Miscellaneous Metals Detailing: Demonstrated knowledge of detailing stairs, railings, platforms, embeds, and custom metal fabrications in accordance with AISC standards and field tolerances.

Fabrication & Installation Knowledge: Understanding of fabrication processes, weld symbols, material callouts, cut lists, and installation sequencing to support shop and field efficiency.

Revision & Document Control: Ability to manage drawing revisions, maintain logs, and ensure accurate version control through approval and closeout.

Estimating & Quantity Takeoffs: Capable of performing accurate quantity takeoffs and supporting material, labor, and pricing inputs for bids and estimates.

Coordination & Technical Communication: Effectively collaborates with Project Managers, engineers, fabricators, and field teams to resolve conflicts and clarify design intent.

Accuracy & Quality: Drawings require minimal revisions due to errors or omissions. Shop and field teams can fabricate and install with minimal clarification.

Timeliness: Drawings and revisions are completed on schedule and aligned with project milestones. Estimating support is delivered within bid timelines.

Constructability: Drawings reflect practical fabrication and installation methods. Conflicts and constructability issues are identified early and resolved proactively.

Collaboration: Positive feedback from Project Managers, fabrication teams, and installers. Effective participation in coordination and kickoff meetings.

Estimating Contribution: Quantity takeoffs and material lists are accurate and reliable. Scope assumptions and clarifications are clearly documented.

Process & Standards: Consistent use of company detailing standards, templates, and file structure. Accurate revision tracking and documentation through project closeout.

Physical Requirements The role requires prolonged periods of sitting at a workstation or during meetings and travelling (by plane or car). The employee must be able to lift to 20 pounds as needed, demonstrate dexterity to write and use a computer keyboard and mouse, and possess the ability to hear, speak clearly, and distinguish colors on graphs and charts. The role also requires occasional visits to construction sites, where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures.
