Position located in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - Southeast Network (VISN 7) - VA Augusta Health Care System (VAAHCS) in Augusta, Georgia. This position is part of the Sterile Processing Service. The GS-07 Lead Medical Supply Technician functions at the full performance level as a Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing).

Base Pay Range $53,067.00/yr - $68,991.00/yr

Summary Effective Sterile Processing Lead with experience in medical equipment reprocessing, quality assurance, staff leadership, and adherence to SOPs.

Qualifications

United States citizenship.

Six months of experience demonstrating the ability to perform the work or an understanding of the work.

One year above high school education, including at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses.

Equivalent combination of experience and education qualifies as entry level (both education and experience acceptable).

Certification not required; may qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision if you are a current VHA employee.

Knowledge, Skills, Attributes (KSAs) required: instruction on procedures and protocols; communication with staff; interpersonal relationships with employees, team leaders, and managers; understanding of sterility principles; leadership and scheduling; overseeing SOP compliance; spot‑checking work; assessing quality and quantity of equipment reprocessing; providing performance information to management.

Preferred Experience: Minimum 3 years of sterile processing experience.

Sterile Processing Certification is preferred.

Duties

Cleans, decontaminates, and reprocesses flexible and rigid endoscopes according to the Manufacturer Instrument Functional Use (MIFU).

Determines appropriate methods for cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of critical and semi‑critical RMD (Reusable Medical Device) to prevent cross‑contamination while avoiding damage to equipment.

Disassembles instruments/equipment, removes gross contamination, and manually washes and decontaminates instruments per MIFU.

Prepares surgical case carts and notifies supervisor of missing items.

Stores, issues, and maintains locator records on all SPS cycled equipment.

Advises medical personnel on proper equipment use.

Demonstrates proficiency in using RMD appropriate to the position.

Demonstrates infection‑control practices for disease prevention (hand washing, universal precautions/isolation procedures, including TB requirements).

Performs duties in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean‑sterile supply, and other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus.

Manages workload distribution and scheduling, revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated workload changes, and assigns work based on experience and training needs.

Monitors and reports on the status of work; ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed; reviews work in progress or spot‑checks work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.

Assesses quality and quantity of work by reviewing cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, materials, and instrumentation.

Instructs employees on work‑related activities, policies, procedures, and goals.

Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes, and task completion.
