Summary A Police Officer at the UNC Hospital campus is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, and property within the campus. Officers perform a variety of law‑enforcement duties, including patrolling, responding to emergencies, and enforcing hospital policies and regulations. This role is critical in maintaining a secure and peaceful environment conducive to healthcare delivery.
Commitment Incentive This position is eligible for a $15,000 commitment incentive spread over a two‑year period.
Responsibilities
Emergency Response – Respond to any emergency and activate security/panic alarms; participate in the Emergency Response Team; maintain knowledge of emergency codes and UNC Hospitals Police response procedures.
Conflict Resolution – Mediate and resolve conflicts or disturbances involving patients, visitors, or staff; use de‑escalation techniques; assist with mental‑health patient custody issues; arrange transportation to other facilities.
Community Policing – Patrol campuses; investigate complaints and violations; implement preventative patrol techniques; deter crime and promote safety practices across campuses.
Investigations & Incident Report Writing – Enter incident reports; investigate and document criminal incidents; apprehend and arrest; submit arrest paperwork, felony prosecution reports, and citations; conduct criminal history checks.
Patrol and Surveillance – Patrol assigned areas; document hazards; escort personnel; provide after‑hours access; maintain patient commitment documents.
Policy & Procedures – Familiar with departmental and hospital policies; apply federal and NC criminal statutes; understand use of force.
Special Areas of Responsibility – Manage security‑sensitive areas; conduct light and airway box surveys, panic‑alarm inspections, access control inspections, and special event coordination.
Community Engagement – Build positive relationships; provide assistance to enhance security and well‑being.
Traffic Control – Enforce parking regulations; write citations; initiate towing.
Other Information Education Requirements: None required if other qualifications are met. Successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training or equivalent.
Licensure / Certification Requirements
Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Completed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training with at least a general certification from the NC CJETSC.
Out‑of‑State Candidates
Completed a BLET course accredited by their state.
No break in service exceeding one year.
Must complete 56 hours of additional training and pass the NC exam.
Pass background investigation, driving and criminal history review, psychological testing, polygraph, drug screening, and physical exam.
Pass qualification course of fire with issued duty weapon.
Professional Experience Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified law‑enforcement officer.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Work a shift of duty from 5:50 am to 5:50 pm or 5:50 pm to 5:50 am; shifts may change.
Strong verbal and written communication; professional interaction with public and criminal‑justice representatives.
Write computer‑generated reports with 70 % passing score.
Adhere to moral and ethical principles; possess sound character.
Work cooperatively or independently as part of a team.
Take lead or initiative with minimal supervision.
Be dependable, accurate, and honest.
Make objective, wise decisions.
Exhibit professional character and practice.
Apply laws, ordinances, and departmental policies to a broad range of circumstances.
