The Town of Garner’s Fleet Maintenance Division is looking for a motivated and dependable Fleet Mechanic to join our team. In this vital role, you’ll keep our Public Works vehicles, large trucks, and equipment operating safely and efficiently ensuring the Town of Garner stays on the move. From light-duty cars to heavy trucks, construction equipment, and small engines, you’ll take pride in maintaining and repairing the machinery that keeps our community running strong. Examples Of Duties
Perform semi-skilled to skilled major mechanical repairs and adjustments on most equipment, including work on engines, drive lines, brakes, steering, electrical, cooling systems, suspension, air conditioning or related systems on a variety of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Perform minor tune-ups and adjustments, change oil, filters, wiper blades, light bulbs, mounts and balances tires as needed.
Conduct vehicle multi point inspections and NC safety and emissions inspections.
Sharpens and replaces mower blades.
Performs periodic preventive maintenance, servicing gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, and equipment.
Always maintain work and surrounding areas in and outside of the shop in a clean and orderly condition.
Observes and practices all safety rules and regulations that are job related.
Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Have a high school diploma (or equivalent).
Have a driver's license valid in North Carolina and good driving record.
Have North Carolina Safety and Emissions inspection license.
Have a Class B commercial driver's license; or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Training or education in automotive technology or related field is preferred.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications are not required but are highly preferred.
Be able to utilize auto repair software, such as Alldata, by following diagnostic and repair procedures and being able to follow and understand wiring schematics as well as accurately entering information into the Town’s fleet management software.
Extensive knowledge in the use of automotive diagnostic scanners and computerized diagnostic equipment is required.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
Work in this class is described as strenuous and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.
Employees must have visual acuity to perform detailed inspection of small defects or parts, use measurement devices, and assemble parts at distances close to the eyes.
Employees must also have the visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and use machines such as hoists, lifts, and perform semi-skilled tasks of a non-repetitive in support of trades’ personnel.
The employee is subject to hazards, including moving mechanical equipment, electrical current, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dust.
This employee may work in close quarters, crawl spaces, small enclosures, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
Additional Information The Fleet Maintenance Shop is open from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday-Friday.
The selected candidate will be provided with a Town issued master tool set with toolbox for their use in performing duties at the Town of Garner.
The salary range shown is the hiring range. The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
