Arthrex is a global medical device company and leader in orthopedics medical education. With a corporate mission of Helping Surgeons Treat Their Patients Better™, Arthrex pioneers the field of arthroscopy and develops more than 1,000 innovative products and procedures each year that support all aspects of orthopedics. The 3DAnatomy team is a new and rapidly growing team dedicated to creating realistic anatomical simulators for training, testing, and education purposes. We are looking for an Engineer I to collaborate in the production process of anatomically accurate 3D medical models, from conception to delivery, to create high‑quality and accurate 3D printed models used in demonstrations, training, and prototyping.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Examine and segment medical data in the form of radiographs, CT scans, MRI scans, and other relevant data for design use.
Collaborate in all phases of the 3D model creation process including initial segmentation, model refinement, creation of CAD‑based modular features, materials settings, and assigning 3D printing settings, and laboratory testing.
Utilize CAD software and skills to create modular structures of differing anatomies, as well as replaceable components and mechanical fixation features.
Review medical education documentation, and live or recorded surgical procedures to better understand the critical anatomy and design features required for each project.
Assist with the testing of designed models in mock surgical settings using equipment and tools typical of an orthopedic surgeon.
Produce well‑documented steps highlighting creation, development, and execution of 3D anatomy and anatomical CAD models.
Work with Department Managers, 3D Animators, Product Managers, Orthopedic Research and Medical Education.
Interact with surgeons and/or clinical specialists to develop accurate and representative anatomical models and features.
Design, participate, and when required, execute research studies involving anatomical data in either digital or physical form for anatomical or biomechanical analysis.
Research and utilize various materials, including polymeric materials such as silicone and urethane, for replication of anatomical structures.
Observe surgical demonstrations, including cadaver dissections.
Support Product Development activities related to manufacturing and production handled at Arthrex Manufacturing.
Maintain an organized workflow and collaborate with team timelines and expectations.
Attend conferences, meetings, or other educational activities to further assess new technologies and methods.
Up to 25% travel required.
Knowledge and Skills
Fundamental knowledge and use of SolidWorks, or related CAD programs required.
Fundamental knowledge and use of Mimics, Simpleware, 3DSlicer, or related medical segmentation software required.
Fundamental knowledge and use of 3‑matic, Magics, Geomagic Design X, or related medical 3D modeling software required.
Fundamental understanding of general anatomy and anatomical terminology required.
Fundamental knowledge and use of 3D printing, preferred.
Fundamental knowledge and use of silicone, urethanes, or other polymeric casted materials, preferred.
Fundamental knowledge of laboratory and experimental testing skills preferred.
Education / Experience BS in Biomedical, Mechanical, or related Engineering degree required.
