Historic Newspaper Project Assistant

– Student Part‑Time (15 hours/week, Mon‑Fri 8‑4)

$13.00/hour
Job Summary
– This position is with the Special Collections Research Center located in the Margaret I. King Library Building. The student assistant will have a hands‑on role working with fragile archival materials and supporting the project through both physical preservation and digitization processes.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct inventory of historic newspapers
Carefully handle and prepare fragile newspapers for digitization and long‑term storage
Scan newspapers using appropriate equipment and techniques to preserve image quality and integrity
Organize, label, and store digital files according to established naming conventions and archival standards
Maintain accurate records of items inventoried, scanned, and stored
Use spreadsheets and other tools to track project progress and metadata
Qualifications
Currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky
English language proficiency
Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Ability to handle fragile, rare, and special material objects with care and respect for the intrinsic value of archival materials
Experience with Photoshop and photography helpful but not required
Basic familiarity with spreadsheets helpful but not required
Physical Requirements Ability to push and/or lift objects up to 30 pounds.
Shift 15 hours a week, Monday–Friday, 8‑4.
