Job Summary
The Spiritual Care Supervisor/Staff Chaplain provides compassionate spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff while overseeing the operations of the Spiritual Care Department. This role combines direct pastoral care with leadership responsibilities, including supervising chaplains, managing schedules, and ensuring quality spiritual care services. The position requires strong counseling skills, cultural and religious sensitivity, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The chaplain also serves as adjunct faculty for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs and participates in departmental education initiatives.

Essential Functions
Provide spiritual care assessments and interventions for patients, families, and staff, responding to diverse spiritual and emotional needs in a non‑judgmental manner.
Deliver crisis intervention during emergencies (e.g., Code Blue) and share in trauma and on‑call coverage (daytime, weekends, overnight).
Lead religious rituals, services, bereavement groups, and support groups as appropriate.
Supervise Staff Chaplains, Contractor Chaplains, and CPE Chaplains; oversee onboarding, training, and continuing education programs.
Manage departmental operations, including scheduling, payroll, and compliance with project deadlines and budgets.
Conduct annual performance evaluations and participate in interviewing and hiring processes.
Maintain accurate documentation in electronic medical records and ensure adherence to organizational policies.
Promote a positive patient experience and demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills.
Education And Experience Requirements
Education: Master’s Degree (M.Div. or equivalent) required.
Clinical Training: Completion of Clinical Pastoral Education (minimum 4 units) required.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year in pastoral care and 3 years of chaplaincy experience preferred; experience in healthcare settings strongly preferred.
Certifications and Licenses
Board Certification (or eligibility) by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), NACC, NAJC, or equivalent required within 18 months of hire.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Direct supervision of Contractor Chaplains (5–8) and CPE Chaplains (5–10).
Responsibilities include instructing, reviewing work, hiring/terminating, assigning work, assessing performance, and disciplining.
Work Environment
Primarily indoor hospital setting with frequent walking, standing, and interaction with patients and staff.
Requires flexibility for on‑call and emergency response coverage.
Physical demands include occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs.), standing, walking, and sitting.
