Cross Categorical Special Education Teacher Assistant - Longfellow Middle School Position Start Date: January 12, 2026

Salary/Wage: $19.77 per Hour ($19.52 per Hour prior to certification)

Appointment Type: Full Time

The School District of La Crosse is accepting applications for a 1.0 FTE Cross Categorical (ID Emphasis) Special Education Teacher Assistant at Longfellow Middle School. Projected start date: January 12, 2026.

This is a certified position. Certified Teacher Assistant positions require a Special Education Program Aide License from the Department of Public Instruction ($100.00 expense to employee with reimbursement by the district once approved.)

Position Responsibilities

Assist individual students or small groups to reinforce learning activities.

Assist with the supervision of students during classroom and other activities including field trips.

Carry out individualized areas of IEPs and behavior plans as developed and directed by teacher.

Nurture independent behavior of students.

Help with generalized classroom tasks the regular classroom and the special education resource room.

Help with individual, small group, and large group activities—both instructional and non‑instructional in both regular and special education classroom environments.

Provide supervision and assistance with students on community job sites.

Assist students with bathroom/hygiene needs and other self‑care routines.

Assist students at breakfast/lunch/other eating times.

Must be able to physically restrain students as necessary within parameters of student IEP and Board of Education policy.

Assist students in specially designed physical education program.

Help with other generalized classroom tasks as assigned.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Two years of education beyond high school or 48 post‑high‑school credits or an Associate’s Degree preferred.

In lieu of post‑high‑school education, acceptable proficiency scores for WorkKeys ACT assessment is required.

Ability to correctly lift and reposition students (who may weigh up to 150 pounds or more) and must be willing and able to use physical restraint when necessary.

Actual employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a Job Specific Screening.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with students with special education needs.

Certification in adult/child CPR and First Aid required—will train to upgrade skills if needed.

Knowledge of and experience with medical procedures (such as tracheotomy tubes, suctioning, etc.) required—will upgrade training if needed.

CPI certification—will train to upgrade skills if needed.
