Library Assistant Part‑Time – Harnett County Main Library
Join Harnett County Schools as a Library Assistant Part‑Time at the Harnett County Public Library System. This role performs library circulation tasks and provides information services to the public through modern library techniques and technology.
Position Summary Employee may work up to 29 hours per week and requires schedule flexibility; shifts include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends at the Harnett County Main Library and occasionally at other branch locations.
Hiring Range $16.00–$23.00 hourly pay rate.
Duties and Responsibilities
Respond to routine inquiries and refer patrons to appropriate resources within the library or online reference materials.
Perform circulation duties, including registering new patrons, checking items in and out, collecting overdue fines and fees, handling cash, reserving library materials, and troubleshooting patron account issues.
Sort books, publications, and other items according to established procedures and return them to proper shelf locations.
Efficiently locate library materials for patrons, including books, periodicals, DVDs, and audiobooks.
Instruct patrons on how to access and use a variety of online and digital materials, including the library’s e‑book collection.
Inspect returned books for circulating condition and identify repair needs.
Assist patrons with various office equipment, including fax, copier, and computer.
Select substitute titles when requested materials are unavailable, following criteria such as genre, age level, and subject interests.
Retrieve items to and from library stacks by hand or by use of pushcarts.
Generate a holds list report and locate specified items for reservation holds and special requests.
Perform minor cleaning and disinfecting of high‑traffic surfaces and other safety procedures such as end‑of‑day walk‑throughs and checking lights and doors.
Assist in preparing creative book displays and support various library programs (e.g., adult outreach, children’s department, local history).
Assist patrons with self‑checkout terminals, coin machines, and self‑service holds.
Conduct regular shelf reading assignments, identify missing or lost items, and communicate cataloging questions.
Balance cash drawer at beginning and end of each day and prepare daily deposit.
Perform routine opening and closing duties.
Work collaboratively with the team to maintain a service focus, prioritize the patron experience, and creatively connect readers to their books.
Assist co‑workers with additional duties as assigned.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma.
No experience required; however, experience in a library or customer service setting is preferred.
Or equivalent education and/or experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of general computer technology, trends, and applications.
Knowledge of public library operations, including circulation, reference services, children’s and adult services, and programming.
Skill in providing quality customer service to patrons.
Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
Ability to plan and implement creative programming for children and teens.
Ability to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment as needed.
Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine and non‑routine tasks.
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
Supplemental Information Physical Demands Must be able to perform light work frequently, exerting up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally require exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Physical abilities include crouching, kneeling, lifting, stooping, reaching, and standing. Visual acuity to analyze data, work with color or depth perception, and use a computer is required.
Work Environment The employee works in a library environment. Duties require an assigned schedule that may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, and working at the main branch in Lillington and other branch libraries.
Temporary or Part‑Time Employees are not eligible to receive benefits.
