Primary Purpose Ensures compliance with all applicable tax regulations and supports strategic tax planning initiatives. Manages tax reporting, research, and analysis to minimize risk and optimize tax strategies while upholding the institution’s mission and financial integrity.

Essential Job Functions
1. Responsible for the semi-annual federal and state Foreign Gift and Contract reporting which entails working with various university departments to obtain foreign-sourced gifts and contracts, reviewing documentation to determine whether it meets legal requirements for reporting, documenting determinations and preparing and filing reports.
2. Reviews and determines independent contractor requests for appropriate worker classification.
3. Determines tax implications, calculation of imputed income and tax reporting for various fringe benefits and consults with Human Resources and Payroll.
4. Manages nonresident alien tax withholding and reporting including review of AP payment requests for withholding and/or tax treaty eligibility.
5. Determines tax implications for various people payments related to but not limited to grants, business expenses, fellowships, prizes and awards etc.
6. Performs technical tax research and document conclusions via tax memorandums.
7. Monitors changes in tax laws and assesses their impact on the institution.
8. Advises on tax implications of new programs, grants, and business activities.
9. Develops and implements tax compliance procedures, best practices and internal controls.
10. Partners with departments to provide guidance on tax-related issues for contracts, payroll, and procurement.
11. Assists as needed with the preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns, including income, and sales/use tax. Ensures compliance with IRS regulations, state statutes, and higher education-specific tax requirements.
12. Completes special projects as assigned.
13. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Job Requirements Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
1. Strong knowledge of federal and state tax regulations, fringe benefits, non-resident alien tax rules and worker classification.
2. Proficiency in tax software and ERP systems.
3. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
4. Ability to conduct tax research and effectively communicate tax implications to non-tax stakeholders.
5. Proficiency in Excel and Word.
6. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Required Education Bachelor’s degree
Major (if required:) Accounting or Finance
Required Experience Five (5) years of tax accounting experience in higher education or nonprofit sector.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Master’s degree in Tax, JD, or LLM preferred.
2. CPA preferred.
3. Experience with IRS Form 990 and related schedules.
4. Familiarity with tax issues unique to higher education institutions.
5. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex organizational environment.
