Locum Consultant Paediatrician The closing date is 25 January 2026

With immediate effect we are seeking to recruit a Locum Consultant Paediatrician to be part of a dynamic acute paediatric team for a period of 3 months.

The successful applicant will join a team of hospital-based paediatricians who deliver a range of children's services with separate Paediatric and Neonatal rotas at consultant and trainee level. The team includes 8 enthusiastic and forward‑thinking General Consultant Paediatricians. The Paediatric Directorate has 24 consultants of whom 8 are acute, 6 community, 8 neonatal and 1 paediatric audio‑vestibular consultant. The post is intended to be full time on 8 PAs with full on‑call commitment.

Main duties of the job

Provision of inpatient services for Wirral Hospital Trust, including ward rounds and supervision of paediatric medical patients on the children's ward.

Dealing with paediatric medical emergencies in the A&E department.

Seeing children referred by General Practitioners for a second opinion.

Clinical assessment, investigation and management of children in hospital, community and Child Development Centre based out‑patient clinics; taking responsibility on a rotational basis for a weekly Urgent Clinic and GP hotline.

Medically assessing children with suspected physical abuse in an emergency and liaising with social services and other disciplines for further assessment.

1 in 8 on‑call commitment for acute paediatric admissions, with responsibility for ongoing care in a rotational working system including ward responsibilities the week following the on‑call weekend.

Developing working patterns in partnership with Consultant colleagues in Community Paediatrics, Social Services and Education colleagues to promote child health needs within Wirral across traditional professional demarcations.

Person Specification —

Qualifications

Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC.

Entry onto the Specialist Register for the GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST/CESR.

Appropriate higher medical qualification such as MRCP.

MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.

Clinical Experience

High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the speciality.

Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on‑call rota for the speciality.

Management & Administrative Experience

Supervision of post graduate trainees.

Personal time management skills.

Clinical Governance.

Ability to organise in‑patient and out‑patient waiting lists.

Familiarity with issues of service organisation and development.

Ability to work in partnership to deliver a patient‑centred service.
