Assistant Deputy Chief Probation Officer – San Joaquin County Probation Department
Class promotional examination. Current Probation Department employee required. Must meet Civil Service Rule 10, Section 3 – Eligibility for Promotional Examinations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan, direct, staff and coordinate major probation service functions involving youth and adult care, custody, and rehabilitation.
Supervise and evaluate staff; provide administrative and technical direction; assure work quality and accuracy.
Conduct daily unit inspections; maintain safety and security of equipment and supplies.
Oversee personnel and labor relations activities; coordinate with County Human Resources and Labor Relations.
Plan and conduct in‑service training programs; oversee departmental training activities.
Prepare and present administrative investigations, complaints, and reports.
Develop, recommend and implement administrative policies and division operating procedures; stay current on probation‑related issues.
Manage major studies, projects, initiatives and other assigned activities; develop goals and objectives.
Research, analyze and prepare program and project data; prepare written communications, charts, graphs and other documents.
Assist with budget preparation; monitor project expenditures; propose new programs and projects.
Attend training programs, conferences and institutes; serve as community resource; speak before public groups and serve on boards and committees.
Exercise arrest powers; transport individuals; physically restrain or subdue individuals as required; carry a firearm in the performance of duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Pattern I
– One year experience as Probation Unit Supervisor in San Joaquin County.
Pattern II
– Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university; preferred degree in administration of justice, corrections, psychology, sociology, counseling or related social or behavioral science; one year supervisory probation officer experience at a level comparable to Probation Unit Supervisor.
Pattern III
– Two years experience as Juvenile Facility Supervisor in San Joaquin County; possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Peace officer status required; must satisfy California peace officer criteria and complete CORE training within one year of appointment.
Must be at least 21 years of age; pass background investigation and meet physical standards; qualify to use a firearm.
SELECTION PROCEDURES
Written Exam – Multiple choice; 70% minimum rating.
Oral Exam – Structured interview; 70% minimum rating.
Written & Oral Exam – Weighted 60% written, 40% oral; 70% minimum rating on each examination.
Rate‑out – Paper rating; not scheduled for rate‑out process.
