JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction, and repair of road and bridge facilities; operates medium and heavy construction and maintenance equipment, and heavy duty and tandem trucks. Work varies, individual judgment within prescribed standards and procedures may be required; Performs work of some complexity and adjusts work methods to meet task requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates and maintains medium, and heavy equipment including tandem trucks, loads and hauls equipment, asphalt, sand and gravel, and other construction and maintenance materials to various work sites;
Operates trucks, compactor, motor grader, dozer, scraper to finish grades, excavators, belly dumps, front end loaders, rollers, bacld1oes, snow plows, and all similar equipment in various assignments;
Uses a variety of hand and power tools and performs the duties of laborer as required;
Checks tires, oil, lubricant, water levels, lights, fuel, and makes repairs to equipment operated;
May be assigned a specific area of the County to maintain roadways including grading, snowplowing, mowing, inspecting roads, culverts, bridges, repairs or replaces signs, or other related duties;
Performs related duties as may be assigned.
Prepares minimal records of own activities;
Uses equipment requiring care to assure against breakdown or deterioration;
Contacts with the public are frequent and incidental to performance of duties;
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS
Generally, none. However, may act as a Lead Worker by assignment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of training and education equivalent to completion of high school or equivalent grade AND some work experience;
Two (2) years demonstrated work experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities, or similar activities, including the use of trucks and light and medium equipment is desirable;
Must be able to obtain Flagger Endorsement within first (6) months of employment and may be required to obtain Wildland Fire Certification;
Must possess a valid Montana Operator's License or CDL with appropriate endorsements, appropriate to the job assignment;
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment up to 100 pounds (heavier loads with assistance).
Perform frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and working in awkward positions.
Stand, walk, and work for extended periods on uneven, steep, or rough terrain.
Enter, exit, and climb onto heavy trucks and equipment multiple times per shift.
Operate equipment, tools, and vehicle controls requiring hand-eye coordination and grip strength.
Work outdoors year-round in extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, and icy conditions.
Tolerate exposure to dust, mud, loud noise, vibration, fumes, and chemicals.
Maintain awareness and safety while working near moving traffic or in remote areas.
Sit for extended periods while operating vehicles and alternate with strenuous manual labor.
Work long shifts, irregular hours, and seasonal overtime (e.g., snow removal, flood response).
