Cal State Fullerton currently provides residence hall and apartment style living for approximately 2,200 students that is safe, clean, and very convenient. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Groundsworker. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Responsibilities

Planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers.

Rake leaves, remove weeds, clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots.

Prepare and treat soils for planting.

Maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, and equipment in proper condition and repair.

Trim trees, hedges, shrubs; erect tree supports.

Operate and perform minor maintenance on small and medium-size power mowers, riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment.

Assist qualified specialists in sprinkler repair, spraying, or tree trimming, and provide lead work direction to students or unskilled assistants.

Perform minor repairs; sweep or power blow grounds, including exterior walkways, seating areas, bike and trash enclosures, and recreational areas.

Maintain irrigation systems, perform minor sprinkler head repairs, and set automatic control devices as needed.

Fertilize and apply chemicals in assigned areas on an occasional basis.

Perform incidental tree trimming and maintenance work.

Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods.

General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.

Ability to recognize common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California.

Perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification.

Utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination.

Learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment.

Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow simple oral and written instructions.

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

Background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
