Equipment Operator /Plant Mechanic (Wastewater Treatment Plant)

Distinguishing Feature of the Class:

The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy and specialized motor equipment. Operation of this type of equipment entails unusual responsibility for the safety of others. The incumbent is also responsible for repairs to plant equipment involving pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electric equipment. Direct supervision is usually received from a higher‑level employee who assigns tasks and inspects work in process and upon completion. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of laborers on specific assignments. The incumbent does related work as required. Typical Work Activities:

Operates and maintains heavy equipment and other motor equipment as assigned and needed. Performs metal cutting and welding repairs to equipment. Operates and maintains torches, drills, and saw bearing press. Operates and maintains high‑powered pressure washers and grinders. Operates, reads, and makes corrections according to shaft‑aligning analyzer, gauges, and voltage meters. Maintains supplies and parts inventory for plant equipment. May operate vehicles equipped with snowplows during the winter months. Performs a variety of related duties as required. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

Good knowledge of the operation of heavy motor equipment; good knowledge of the operation of disposal systems; ability to make repairs to such equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude. Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency diploma and two years of experience in the operation of heavy motor equipment, AND two years of experience in the repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment. Special Requirement:

Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s license. Appointee must obtain CDL certification within ten (10) months of appointment and maintain throughout the tenure of employment. Compensation:

$25/hr. to $30/hr. depending on qualifications. Excellent benefits and NYS Retirement.
