Custodian – Facilities Management
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness of the university, providing high‑level customer service to the campus community, and maintaining professional conduct in accordance with the Adelphi University confidentiality agreement and the Adelphi Employee Handbook.
The Facilities Management Department supports Adelphi’s Momentum Strategic Plan by delivering well‑maintained, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing facilities to meet the needs of the university community.
SALARY INFORMATION Union position salary: $42,900 (in compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act).
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Sweep, mop, strip, wax floors, vacuum and clean carpets on a routine basis.
Dust and polish furniture, window ledges, walls, and other surfaces.
Clean and disinfect restroom spaces, common areas, water bottle filling stations, and entrances.
Empty trash and recycle receptacles; clean and disinfect containers as needed; remove garbage from inside the buildings and deposit in appropriate external dumpsters.
Replace soap and paper products in dispensers.
Carry equipment and move furniture to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks weighing up to 50 pounds (with assistance for >50 pounds).
Clean and disinfect all exterior entrances of all campus buildings.
Follow COVID‑19 disinfection protocols and maintain disinfection logs.
Perform snow removal of exterior building entrances, stairs, and accessible ramps up to 15 feet.
REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Knowledge of basic custodial procedures and ability to complete tasks within work time.
Proficiency and safe operation of janitorial equipment such as buffers, carpet cleaners, extractors, floor scrubbers.
Knowledge of and ability to use common hand tools (hammers, screwdrivers, pliers).
Ability to perform routine, repetitive cleaning and semi‑skilled tasks.
Physical strength to lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds independently; ability to lift objects >50 pounds with assistance.
Ability to distinguish between cleaning materials.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to perform disinfection protocols and complete disinfection logs daily at shift end.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Pushing/Pulling constantly (moving equipment, furniture, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, buffing floors, carpet cleaning, project work).
Frequent lifting/carrying of equipment and furniture.
Standing/walking continuously throughout the day.
Walking and coverage of several campus buildings.
Reaching required for sweeping, dusting, buffing, and mopping.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Three to five years of prior cleaning experience required.
HOURS 4 pm to 12 am, weekends included.
