The challenging but rewarding career of a Life Skills Education Assistant (also known as a Para-Professional) helps students with disabilities under the direction of a Certified Teacher. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to observe a class and ask questions prior to formal offer.

Qualifications

Work under the direction of a certified teacher and assist them in successfully conducting lessons, setting up equipment and activities.

Ability to independently monitor and supervise special needs students in the classroom, between classes and during lunch in small groups or one-on-one.

Flexibility and initiative to encourage and nurture students.

Patience and ability to enforce good behavior and provide discipline with dignity.

The physical ability to regularly stand, walk or sit on the floor while working with students in different settings.

The physical ability to regularly move, lift or restrain students.

This position could include assisting students with toileting routines and needs.

Helping at meal times to feed students with a variety of abilities, possibly including tube feeding.

Provide medical support or intervention.

Ability to meet standards of the Life Skills Educational Assistant (Para-Professional).

Requirements

Two (2) years of college coursework or Associate's Degree (may be waived pending successful performance on skills test administered by the District).

High School Diploma or GED required.

Candidate must be fingerprinted.
