Job Summary The Director of Risk Management provides strategic leadership in developing, implementing, and maintaining the hospital’s risk management and patient safety programs. This role ensures a proactive approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks that could affect patient safety, regulatory compliance, or organizational integrity. The Director collaborates closely with hospital administration, legal counsel, and department leaders to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement across the facility.

Essential Functions

Directs and manages the facility’s risk management program, identifying and evaluating risks associated with patient care and service delivery.

Develops, implements, and updates policies and procedures to promote a safe environment and comply with regulatory requirements.

Leads patient safety initiatives, including root cause analyses, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and other quality improvement efforts.

Provides education and guidance to departments on risk management practices, incident reporting, and corrective actions to mitigate risk.

Manages claims and litigation processes, coordinating with legal counsel and maintaining detailed documentation.

Develops and presents reports to administration, Governing Board, and relevant committees regarding real and potential risk issues.

Ensures accurate management and review of occurrence reporting systems, analyzing data to identify trends and implement improvement strategies.

Oversees departmental budget and resources, maintaining fiscal accountability and aligning goals with the hospital's mission and objectives.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

Complies with all policies and standards.

Leadership Responsibilities

Supervision and Staff Management

Lead, mentor, and develop departmental staff to promote engagement, professional growth, and accountability.

Oversee scheduling, workload management, and performance evaluations.

Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that supports professional excellence and employee satisfaction.

Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight

Collaborate with executive leadership to define the department’s strategic direction and performance goals.

Develop and manage the departmental budget, ensuring cost‑effective service delivery.

Evaluate and implement new systems, technologies, or tools to enhance operational efficiency and risk monitoring.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with

Joint Commission ,

CMS ,

state , and

federal

requirements.

Support accreditation and audit processes by maintaining current documentation and readiness for review.

Implement quality assurance practices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and safety in all departmental operations.

Collaboration and Communication

Partner with interdisciplinary teams to strengthen risk mitigation efforts and improve overall patient outcomes.

Maintain awareness of evolving regulations, industry standards, and best practices.

Communicate effectively with staff, leadership, and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree

in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field required; Seven (7)+ years of direct experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

3–5 years

of related experience in healthcare risk management required.

3–5 years

of leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Proven ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and implement corrective actions.

Knowledge of

risk management principles ,

patient safety programs , and

healthcare regulations .

Skilled in conflict resolution, collaboration, and cross‑functional leadership.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.

Proficiency with

Microsoft Office Suite ,

Google Workspace , and healthcare data management systems.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM)

preferred.

Registered Nurse (RN)

license preferred (state or compact).
