All WIC Program staff perform a variety of professional duties for the Women, Infants, and Children participants in our program under the supervision of the WIC Program Coordinator (or Director) and/or the Administrator of WIC Services.
WIC Program staff are guided by a thorough knowledge of our Local Agency Policies and Procedures, applicable United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) federal laws and regulations, the policies, and procedures of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) WIC Program, and Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital (MNRH) policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
Staff are thoroughly trained and knowledgeable in the use of the NYSDOH NYWIC computer system so that they can process participants and information. Both roles participate in the development of the nutrition education and breastfeeding promotion and support plan within our Local Agency Compliance and Self-Assessment (LACASA).
**Essential Functions*** Is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Breastfeeding and Nutrition services in accordance with the policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital (MNRH).
Ensures adherence to all regulations of confidentiality and patient safety as required by federal HIPPA regulations, USDA, the NYSDOH, and MNRH. Implements the rules and regulations of the USDA, the NYSDOH, and MNRH.* Provides intervention and counseling to participants to assist them with breastfeeding needs.
Creates a schedule of breastfeeding education classes/support groups for WIC participants in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
Selects and creates nutrition education materials for use in breastfeeding and nutrition counseling.
Establishes a positive environment for breastfeeding and nutrition services at all 3 Sites using visual educational resources and verbal encouragement.
Travels to all 3 sites.* Participates in outreach activities to promote breastfeeding, nutrition education, and WIC enrollment.* Screens and certifies WIC applicants using verified nutritional risk criteria, medical risk criteria, and anthropometrics in accordance with the NYSDOH guidelines.* Ensures that quality nutrition services are provided to WIC participants
Develop a training plan for staff who provide nutrition and breastfeeding services.
Provide nutrition and breastfeeding in-service training to staff who provide nutrition and breastfeeding services to keep abreast of current nutrition and breastfeeding policies and issues.
Oversees procedures used to fulfill food and formula prescriptions and coordinate with medical providers, as appropriate.* Has a thorough knowledge of the community and public health resources for referral purposes.
Attends conferences, professional seminars, in-service training, and other professional meetings to improve knowledge and strengthen effectiveness.
Report any problems or issues to the WIC Program Coordinator (or Director).* Oversees development of nutrition and breastfeeding education materials
Participates in local and state workgroups to improve nutrition and program services.
Coordinate nutrition services with other WIC program operations, LAs, and community organizations
Stays current with up-to-date nutrition information and shares with LA staff by attending professional conferences, meetings, seminars, training, and WIC Association functions.* Participates in the Quality Assurance (QA) process to ensure staff competency in various nutrition-related areas (i.e., anthropometry, hematology, nutrition education, etc.)
Required to complete the designated 12 hours of continuing education every year.* Performs all other responsibilities of support staff as necessary including rostering, WIC EBT Cards distribution,
registration, scheduling, appointments, and other office duties, etc.* Assists the WIC Program Coordinator (or Director) with related departmental duties( direct supervision of entire team providing coverage in the WIC Coordinator’s absence.
Participate in the development and implementation of the annual Local Agency Compliance and Self-Assessment (LACASA)/Management Evaluation.* Supervise and monitor the activities, training, and documentation of the Peer Counselor Coordinator (PCC) and Peer Counselors (PC) Participate in the development of the LA nutrition education and breastfeeding promotion and support plan
Assist in maintaining a breastfeeding supportive environment
Develop and implement all LA breastfeeding promotion and support activities, including the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program and Breast Pump Program* Ensure that the Peer Counseling Program is standardized, consistent with WIC regulations and policy, and meets USDA’s WIC Breastfeeding Model Components for Peer Counseling
Ensure breastfeeding support and promotion is integrated into new staff orientation and provide annual breastfeeding training for all staff
Provide ongoing supervision and support for all breastfeeding staff
Monitor, compile, and evaluate breastfeeding rates, promotion and support activities, and peer counseling activities* Develop and implement a Breast Pump Program policy for the purchase, distribution, and inventory of pumps per New York State WIC policy.
Oversee the Breast Pump Program for appropriate evaluation of participants’ needs
Maintain the breast pump inventory in the management information system (MIS) and a monthly physical inventory* Train QN/CPA staff on conducting a breast pump assessment and issuing breast pumps
Coordinate breastfeeding promotional activities with community stakeholders
