About This Role The purpose of this position is to lead and manage the administration and operation of the Fitness program, consisting of group fitness, personal training and small group programs. The Assistant Director will be responsible for the overall programming, scheduling, planning, risk management, personnel management, facility management, fiscal management, assessment and marketing/promotions of the Fitness Program.

Specific Duties

Leadership

Develop and execute strategic plans and vision for Fitness program

Produce reports and statistical compilations of program activities

Manage operating budget of the Fitness program

Fitness Programs

Schedule and direct programming for group fitness classes

Organize, review and distribute personal training clients

Schedule and direct programming for small group training programs

Hire, supervise, train, develop and evaluate group fitness instructors and personal trainers

Review and update training procedures and manuals to meet and maintain industry standards

Inventory, manage and maintain the equipment utilized for group fitness, personal training and small group programs

Maintain a review of statistics of the program offerings and participants monthly and yearly

Will track all personal training program participation and income from fitness services

Manage student employee payroll and budget for group fitness instructors and personal trainers

Lead and mentor all group fitness instructors and personal trainers in continuing education, certification and training. This will include developing and implementing continuing education for employees and/or campus community

Develop and implement new programs each semester of the academic year

Manage collaborations with office staff to market programs and services

Plan and implement special events, outreach and marketing for group fitness and personal training

Provide educational outreach for campus community

Work with IM Leagues software system in the operation and betterment of program

Student Development

Assist in the development and management of the department wide student employee leadership and development program, departmental internships, and special events to enable and further the professional experiences of our student staff

General

Coordinate studio, facility, and equipment preparation and maintenance

Coordinate marketing and promotions for the Fitness programs in cooperation with department marketing staff

Develop and continue to improve and maintain customer service practices within the program

Development & Customer Services

What You'll Need to Succeed Minimum Qualifications Requires a bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience. Education beyond the minimum degree requirement may count toward required experience if deemed relevant by the hiring manager. A Ph.D. or master's degree may be required for certain positions within this title. The degree requirement ensures candidates possess the advanced theoretical knowledge of evidence-based frameworks, ethical decision-making skills and a systems-level understanding of health services essential for developing strategy, guiding policy and supporting overall well-being. These competencies are typically developed and rigorously validated only through the comprehensive curriculum and intensive experiential learning inherent in a formal degree program.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology, Nutrition and Wellness, Exercise Science, Recreation Management or a Related Field

One or more years supervisory experience in fitness, group exercise and personal training programming and management

Previous experience as a group exercise instructor and personal trainer with ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCS, NASM or other nationally recognized organization

Leadership and supervisory skills to hire, train, motivate, supervise and evaluate employees as demonstrated through past supervision of staff

Demonstrated experience in personnel management

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing

Additional Role Information

Will serve as member of University Well-being Collaborative

Will attend and make reports to the Recreational Services Council

Will assist in the staff education and preparation in CPR, AED, and First Aid training. Training will include ensuring all staff meets the requirements for BBP, Adult/Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED

Will be responsible for all aspects of risk management

Will serve the University and Department via committees including the Recreational Services Council and others as needed

All areas will include some evening and weekend supervision and responsibilities

Will collaborate with other Assistant Directors/Coordinators on the development, implementation, and assessment of all student development initiatives

Will have no outside duties or jobs that directly interfere with these responsibilities

Will perform other duties as assigned by the Director
