The Crisis Clinician at Overlook Medical Center supports patients with behavioral health needs in the emergency department and the Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) unit. The position completes focused crisis triage reviews, initial crisis evaluations, risk and suicide assessments, concurrent assessments with identified treatment targets, individual interventions and facilitates group interventions on the EmPATH unit. The position operates as part of an interdisciplinary team to formulate and execute treatment directives for patients, collaborating with psychiatry, nursing, medicine and peer specialists. Job Functions
Provide Emergency Crisis Intervention Services
Patient Assessment & Counseling, complete initial clinical and risk assessments for co-occurring, psychiatric and somatic presentations. Formulate provisional dispositions and clinical assessments referencing clinical evidentiary findings to support initial clinical summations. Completing assessments for substance use concerns and withdrawal, identifying symptoms, patterns and risks. Complete de‑escalation interventions with patients independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. Conduct precise and succinct clinical summaries with psychiatric providers as part of a clinical case presentation. Formulate clinical dispositions and after‑care plans, assisting patients in navigating the system care and securing needed clinical appointments. Complete re‑assessments and ongoing clinical interventions for identified treatment targets.
Patient Management
Conduct clinical interventions for patients awaiting placement for either a voluntary or involuntary psychiatric admission. Complete and manage all required legal documentation for involuntary and pediatric psychiatric admissions. Documentation
Complete initial crisis evaluations, risk assessments, safety plans and clinical re‑evaluation assessments as consistent with the standards and policies of the department, administrative codes and state agency requirements. Documentation is precise, accurate, and meets the standards of the Cures Act. Completed consistently within the required timeframes as noted in departmental policy and guidelines. Manages and completes all required departmental reporting documentation and data collection processes. Complete all group sessions documentation and charging requirements as consistent with departmental policy and guidelines. Finalizes after‑care plans and reviews with patients and families prior to discharge as needed.
Pre‑Certification
Complete all required insurance authorizations and follow‑up as needed to obtain coverage for the needed level of care. Family Intervention
Complete collateral information gathering and analysis when clinically indicated. Provide family intervention, support and psychoeducation pertaining to the system of care, psychiatric admission, involuntary process and after‑care planning.
Interdisciplinary Professionalism
Collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary care team including nursing, psychiatric providers, social work, medical providers, mental health assistants and peer specialists. Maintain professional relationships with external professional agencies involved in the patient's care. Participate in short‑term treatment goal planning and after‑care treatment plans.
Quality
Actively contribute and assist in the completion of departmental quality and safety initiatives. Education
Complete assigned departmental competencies and continuing education requirements as assigned and within the timeframe required. De‑escalation
Assist with and conduct de‑escalation interventions for patients as requested and/or clinically indicated in the emergency department, EmPATH Unit and the medical floors. Perform as part of an interdisciplinary Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) within the emergency department, medical floors and EmPATH Unit when requested. Participate in debriefings and reviews post‑intervention as requested.
Patient Care
Operate as part of an interdisciplinary team in the emergency department providing direct patient interventions and clinical care in a dedicated Crisis space. Service Line Support
Assist and complete assessments, authorizations and discharge planning for additional Crisis sites remotely as requested. Other responsibilities may be assigned based on need of the department. Physical Requirements: As defined by Occupation Safety/OMS.
