The PET/CT Technologist prepares and administers high energy short acting radioisotopes to patients in preparation for diagnostic procedures. The technologist prepares and positions patients for scanning and operates PET scanner, dose calibrators, radiation detectors, and radiopharmaceutical tracking software. The technologist is responsible for performing radiation safety and quality control procedures, disposal of radioactive materials, and monitoring the work area to ensure that the levels of radioactive materials are in accordance with NRC regulations. May be required to work in other modalities with appropriate licensure.

Responsibilities

Technical Tasks

Exhibits working knowledge of the PET scanner, dose calibrator, radiation detector, radiopharmaceutical tracking software, and PET procedures.

Performs ordered examinations in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols of the interpreting radiologist.

Administers short acting radioisotopes using ALARA concepts and following NRC and state policies.

Reviews and explains procedure and safety precautions to the patient, completes and signs consent forms, and maintains patient confidentiality.

Obtains patient history and completes screening forms, including pregnancy screening for females of childbearing age.

Prepares films for interpretation and maintains a clean and neat work environment.

Performs equipment quality checks, troubleshoots problems, and orders PET/CT supplies while controlling costs.

Collaborates with healthcare professionals and complies with facility policies to maintain occupational radiation exposures ALARA.

Maintains technical competency through continued education and completes required competencies for equipment and procedures in PET/CT.

Ensures department compliance with regulatory agencies and credentials as appropriate.

Critical Thinking

Obtains necessary information for successful completion of duties and confers with the radiologist.

Performs work accurately and timely, prioritizing procedures during crises or emergent situations.

Organizes daily workload so that exams are completed on time and coordinates the nuclear medicine schedule with other areas.

Acts as Deputy Radiation Safety Officer in the absence of the Radiation Safety Officer.

Other Duties As Assigned

– May be required to work in nuclear medicine as needed.

Qualifications

Experience: Three years’ experience in Nuclear Medicine; one year experience in PET.

Education: Graduate of an AMA accredited school for Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Training: With no prior experience, the technician must complete one year of training exclusively in PET and complete all required PET competencies.

Licensure: ARRT and/or NMTCB licensed and current state license in Nuclear Medicine; BLS Certification.
