Summary: Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospitals mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Responsibilities
- Perform functions associated with the computer system to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
- Patient registration including identification, verification, demographics, insurance information, guarantor, PCP, ordering provider, test orders, diagnostic codes, and document scanning.
- Manage Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABNSN) procedures and related documentation.
- Conduct related clerical activities such as medical necessity follow?up, sorting and filing records, daily checklists, answering phones, report delivery, and patient reception into the clinical treatment area.
- Maintain and monitor standing orders for expiration and renewal.
- Provide patients with forms, give instructions for specimen collection or preparation, and obtain additional patient information when needed.
- Schedule venipunctures or capillary blood punctures according to priority and type of test, including timed studies.
- Utilize computer?generated labels and Pathology Handbook references to ensure specimens are collected in proper containers and meet special collection requirements.
- Verify patient identity and prepare patients for venipuncture procedures, including fasting or special diet instructions.
- Obtain blood samples from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture technique and notify nursing staff or supervisor of any deviations or adverse conditions.
- Collect other types of specimens (e.g., throat culture) and perform necessary processing such as centrifugation and specimen tracking.
- Obtain samples for specialized tests such as thyroid releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, and D?xylose tolerance, verifying volume and timing.
- Monitor patients for reactions during specialized tests, including diaphoresis and sleep states.
- Perform bleeding time tests if required.
- Label, wrap, and transport samples according to type and urgency.
- Maintain records of sample procurement.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Phlebotomy certificate through National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and/or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with a formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
- In lieu of internship, six months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- In lieu of phlebotomy certification, five or more years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.
- Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide information to patients and to explain procedures effectively.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns.
- Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports, including keyboard skills to enter clinical information.
- Familiarity with blood collector equipment, anticoagulants, special precautions and interference.
- Ability to distinguish chromatic colors.
- Phlebotomy certificate required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Works in an inpatient care environment with considerable walking between units; may require some physical effort to handle patients who are uncooperative. Some exposure to odors when handling specimens. Exposure to communicable diseases while administering to patients; risk of injury minimized through infection control procedures. Manual dexterity required for venipunctures.
Pay Range
$18.04 $28.46 per hour
