Phlebotomist
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role is integral in ensuring the smooth operation of specimen collection and handling processes.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
- Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
- Decontaminate equipment and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Understand and comply with all physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
- Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
- Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature protocols.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department training sessions.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draws.
- Experience in specimen collection and handling.
- Understanding of geriatric and pediatric patient needs.
- Strong customer service skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience in a related field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in a medical or laboratory setting is a plus.
Work Environment
This position is based in a small practice with a rheumatologist in Sterling, VA. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
