Under the supervision of the Practice Manager, the phlebotomist is responsible for phlebotomy, obtaining, receiving and specimen processing and report distribution. Completes assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner without compromising the quality of the patient sample. Exercises good judgment in recognizing and correcting irregularities and/or unusual requests. Performs tasks for equipment maintenance. Performs other miscellaneous duties or special projects as assigned. Complies with all aspects of the job according to written procedure.

The schedule for this role would be Monday - Friday 7:30am-4pm.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible: skin puncture and venipuncture.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, as required.
  • Record phlebotomy requisitions.
  • Identify the patient by comparing patients self-report of name, last name and date of birth to the information on the lab requisition order.
  • Fully understand and verify all provider orders.
  • Label and record all test tubes, log procedures and file paperwork.
  • Maintain knowledge of and consistently adhere to test requirements, including color-top tube to use, processing requirements and volume of sample needed.
  • Complete assigned duties efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Perform tasks for equipment maintenance and decontamination.
  • Prioritize STAT, scheduled and outpatient orders.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection container/tube, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Seek guidance and direction when necessary.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification (CPT I) from an agency approved by the California Department of Public Health, preferred.
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a patient service technician/phlebotomist.
  • Proven organizational skills, great interpersonal skills, and ability to work as a key team member.
  • Ability to put patients at ease with minimal discomfort.
  • Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Apple products (iMac, iPad, iPhone).
  • Ability to quickly learn new procedures and processes.
  • Compliance with AC Wellness Occupational Health Policy, including required immunizations.
