Reinert Hay and Commodities (Reinert) is seeking a Senior Commodity Trader -

specifically for feed ingredient trading

- to join our trading team. This is a senior-level role designed for an experienced trader who wants to own their book of business, manage risk responsibly, and build long-term supplier and customer relationships in an asset-backed trading environment.

This is not an entry-level or trainee position. The successful candidate will bring deep industry knowledge, a proven trading track record, and the ability to contribute immediately while operating with a high degree of autonomy and accountability.

How This Role Is Supported While this role carries meaningful ownership and accountability, it is not an isolated position. The Senior Commodity Trader will be supported by an experienced Reinert team across trading, logistics, operations, and accounting. Our traders collaborate closely with operations staff, dispatch, and leadership to ensure execution, manage risk, and solve problems quickly.

You will be expected to run your book independently, but you will never be “on an island.” Reinert's structure is designed to support smart trading decisions with operational follow-through and shared market insight.

Key Responsibilities This role combines desk/phone trading with periodic travel to maintain and grow supplier and customer relationships.

Own and manage buy/sell positions across multiple feed ingredients

Manage and explain risk exposure, including long and short positions

Develop and execute trading strategies based on market data, fundamentals, and experience

Build and maintain strong supplier relationships to secure reliable supply

Grow and service customer accounts with dairies, feedyards, and producers

Track and present P&L, margin, and risk exposure at any given time

Coordinate logistics, delivery schedules, quality control, and customer service

Ensure operational discipline in contracts, collections, and documentation

Participate in weekly trading meetings to review markets, positions, and performance

Qualifications & Experience

5+ years of proven commodity trading experience (hay & feed ingredients preferred)

Demonstrated success managing P&L and running profitable trade positions

Strong risk management skills with the ability to clearly explain exposure

Relationship-driven trading style with strong negotiation skills

Familiarity with feedyard and dairy operations and nutrition

High level of organizational discipline and attention to detail

Excellent communication skills, both internally and externally

About Relevant Trading Experience Experience in grain trading is valued; however, this role is not a traditional grain merchandising position,

but is specific to feed ingredient trading . Trading at Reinert is asset-backed and relationship-driven, requiring active management of logistics, execution, quality, and customer needs across multiple feed ingredients.

Candidates with a grain trading background who have also:

Managed broader commodity exposure,

Worked closely with logistics and operations, or

Traded feed ingredients, byproducts, or non-standardized commodities may be a strong fit and are encouraged to apply.

Success in this role requires comfort operating beyond flat price and basis trading, with a hands-on approach to execution and risk management in real-world supply chains.

Education & Background

Bachelor's degree in Ag Business, Economics, Finance, or related field preferred (equivalent industry experience will be considered)

Direct responsibility for commodity trading decisions and P&L outcomes

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience

Commission based on net margin generated (uncapped)
