Position Title: Assistant Project Manager - Underground Utilities

Location: San Diego, CA (On-site)

Pay Range: $120k - 150k

About the Opportunity

A leading infrastructure general contractor is seeking an experienced Assistant Project Manager to support complex public works and utility projects across Southern California.

With a reputation for delivering large-scale infrastructure safely, efficiently, and with technical excellence, this team is looking for a detail-oriented APM who thrives in a fast-paced, field-driven environment.

This position is ideal for someone who brings strong underground utility experience-specifically in wet utilities, trenching, and underground piping-in California. The role will

work closely with the field and executive teams to drive project performance, support compliance, and exceed client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

* Coordinate and manage field operations in partnership with project superintendents and engineers

* Track project schedule, scope, and costs, identifying risks and opportunities

* Maintain clear and proactive communication with clients, stakeholders, and subcontractors

* Ensure compliance with all contract requirements, safety protocols, and local regulations

* Lead project documentation, change management, and progress reporting

* Mentor Project Engineers and junior team members to support professional growth

* Participate in internal project reviews and financial updates with senior leadership

Requirements

* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience

* 7+ years of field experience in heavy civil or underground construction

* Must have hands-on experience with underground piping, trenching, and wet utility installation in California

* Familiarity with public works requirements, Cal/OSHA standards, and city agency coordination

* OSHA 30 (CAL/OSHA) certification required

* Proven ability to manage and mentor project teams

* Strong time management, organization, and communication skills

* Able to access and navigate active job sites across various terrain and conditions
