ROLE SUMMARY
The Structural Engineering Intern role is designed to provide students with exposure to real-world structural design processes within a precast concrete manufacturing environment. Interns will shadow engineers and designers, assist with engineering tasks, and learn how projects move from design through production. This internship emphasizes learning and professional growth-giving students opportunities to observe, contribute, and apply classroom knowledge to practical engineering challenges.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
* Learn how engineering projects progress from quotation and award through manufacturing.
* Assist with updating design calculations and programming tools under guidance.
* Gain exposure to producing mix designs and performing simple design calculations.
* Shadow engineers to understand common precast repair procedures and workflows.
* Support the review of drawings and design submittals against contract plans.
* Learn how to create 3D models and designs using engineering software.
* Assist in preparing presentations on the design and fabrication process.
* Become familiar with ASTM and ACI design criteria, design loadings, and SCC mix design concepts.
* Participate in special projects or process improvement initiatives as assigned.
SUCCESSFUL RESULTS
* Improved understanding of the structural design process and precast manufacturing environment.
* Exposure to real-world design calculations, modeling, and construction standards.
* Ability to observe and suggest improvements to engineering processes.
* Development of teamwork and communication skills through collaboration with project and production teams.
* Completion of internship learning objectives as outlined with the Engineering team.
REQUIREMENTS
* Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in structural engineering preferred.
* Strong interest in design, structural calculations, and applied engineering.
* Familiarity with Microsoft Office and CAD software; exposure to modeling tools preferred.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Initiative, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
* Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during the internship.
Preferred:
* EIT certification or upper-division coursework in engineering design.
* Prior exposure to structural design or precast construction is a plus.
