JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
To provide professional school nursing services in accordance with the Florida Nurse Practice Act and District School Health Services Plan for students and faculty in assigned school.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* High School Diploma or equivalency diploma.
* Minimum of one (1) year successful experience in nursing.
* Possess a current license of Florida Registered Nurse, Certification in CPR and First Aid
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of federal, state and district rules, regulations and policies as they relate to job functions. Knowledge of the hardware and software applications used in assignment. Knowledge of normal childhood growth and development patterns to recognize abnormalities and symptoms of communicable diseases. Ability to read and interpret applicable laws, rules, policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize activities related to assignment. Ability to make presentations to a variety of audiences. Ability to carry out job responsibilities and handle sensitive information in a confidential manner. Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimum supervision. Ability to compose correspondence and prepare reports in an articulate manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, the general public, and government agencies. Ability to work effectively to furnish needed information to administrators, other department, governmental agencies, media, the general public, and parents. Ability to organize and present health information in a manner to promote comprehension and behavior modification. Ability to assess an emergency situation, secure appropriate assistance and provide emergency care following current protocol. Ability to revise work schedule successfully when extenuating circumstances arise.

SUPERVISES:
Licensed Practical Nurse and/or Health Aide
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Obtain consent from parents/guardians for students prior to providing health services.
* Conduct nursing assessments on students with health complications or identified as high risk for developing health complications. Compile High Risk List and distribute as required.
* Monitor and review physician orders for students receiving medication or requiring procedures or treatments on a routine basis.
* Ensure the proper training and adherence to district guidelines of school personnel who may be responsible for administering medications, procedures and/or treatments.
* Supervise licensed practical nurses, health assistants, and unlicensed assistive personnel as mandated by the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
* Maintain health records on students in assigned schools; complete reports to fulfill the requirements of the current School Health Services Plan.
* Plan, implement, and evaluate procedures involving health concerns and subsequent care in the school setting, including development of care plans and/or emergency action plans.
* Plan and implement in-service activities appropriate for personnel assigned to schools. Provide health information and materials to students and staff. Make recommendations for the provision and/or maintenance of a healthy and safe environment for students and staff.
* Plan, implement, and facilitate the completion of the State of Florida requirements related to screenings and immunizations in accordance with compliance deadlines. Document and follow up on referrals
* Prevent the spread of infection and communicable diseases by way of contact tracing, educating, determining the need for quarantine where appropriate.
* Assist families with appropriate follow-up on medical concerns, the release of information for medical concerns, or suspected medical concerns.
* Participate in Child Study Meetings and the preparation of Individualized education Plans and 504 plans as they pertain to student medical concerns.
* Communicate with parents and teachers via letters, notes and/or phone calls concerning care given, incidence/occurrence, pharmaceutical/medical referrals and/or exclusions.
* Communicate with physicians and other health care professionals on matters affecting the students and staff.
* Medicaid billing of health services for students as appropriate.
* Provide emergency care and first aid as needed.
* Administer and chart prescription medications as needed.
* Serve as a resource person to students, parents, faculty, staff and administration.
* Model and maintain high ethical standards.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
