position, which may be filled at either the
Plant Operator I
or
Plant Operator II
level. Please indicate the level you wish to be considered for when applying. The Plant Operator (I or II) provides skilled plant engineering services by applying technical expertise to a variety of equipment, systems, and controls within the central plant. Work is performed under the direction of the watch Plant Operator and/or engineering management. The level (I or II) will be determined based on experience, licensure, and ability to lead shift operations. Plant Operator I - Step 1: $48.33/hour
Plant Operator II - Step 1: $53.52/hour
Major Job Responsibilities
Both levels perform the following duties, with Plant Operator II handling more advanced or lead responsibilities: Operate steam boilers and plant equipment safely and efficiently Monitor, record, and maintain proper water treatment in central plant systems Inspect, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment and systems, both manually and through the Building Management System (BMS) Perform regular rounds and take gas and water meter readings Inspect kitchen refrigeration equipment during off hours Monitor all BMS system alarms and initiate appropriate notifications Maintain required logs and records (e.g., central plant log, lockout/tagout documentation, completed work records) Additional responsibilities by level: Plant Operator I:
May perform inspections, basic repairs, and administrative recordkeeping under direction. Plant Operator II:
Expected to perform more advanced troubleshooting and repairs and may serve as the watch lead for the shift.
Qualifications
Plant Operator I High School diploma or GED 2-3 years of experience operating low and/or high-pressure steam boilers; basic experience with central plant centrifugal chillers Ability to obtain an
Unlimited Steam License
(City of Los Angeles) within 24 months Ability to obtain
EPA 608 refrigeration license
within 24 months 2 years of experience with BMS, HVAC automation controls, energy management systems, or related fields (2-year technical degree or certificate preferred) Valid California driver's license with fewer than 3 DMV points Plant Operator II High School diploma or GED 4-5 years of experience operating high-pressure steam boilers; basic experience with central plant centrifugal chillers Unlimited Steam License
(City of Los Angeles) required EPA 608 refrigeration license
required Valid California driver's license with fewer than 3 DMV points
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Proficient computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software, email applications, work order systems and BMS systems * Ability to read and understand blue prints and control drawings * Knowledge of water treatment principles for boilers, chiller systems, and cooling towers * Ability to quickly respond to equipment failures by troubleshooting and restoring equipment
