Emergency Medical Dispatcher
Full‑time, on‑site position. Compensation: $19.50 per hour. AMR St. Louis Emergency Communications offers paid training to become an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
American Medical Response is one of the largest private EMD communications centers in the country, serving multiple states in the Midwest. Our call volume includes interfacility requests and emergency requests from private callers and 911 municipalities. Employees triage medical calls and provide pre‑arrival instructions.
What is an Emergency Medical Dispatcher? An Emergency Medical Dispatcher receives, records, and manages requests for ambulance assistance. The dispatcher processes requests to transport medically ill and traumatically injured patients in emergency and non‑emergency situations. The dispatcher must quickly and accurately collect all necessary information to deploy appropriate emergency resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Understands and implements the concepts of Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) as outlined in the Principles of Emergency Medical Dispatch.
Allocates EMS resources based on approved protocols and established processes.
Maintains a high level of expertise in the computer aided dispatching (CAD) system.
Performs complete and accurate data entry for all service requests.
Applies company and departmental policies, operating procedures, and protocols.
Participates in and completes all continuing education as outlined by the department.
Functions effectively in a potentially stressful environment.
Possesses excellent written and verbal skills essential for effective communication with patients, medical personnel, co‑workers, and clients.
Utilizes maps to identify locations related to transport requests and crew safety.
Monitors multiple radio channels to maintain contact with local agencies.
Prioritizes multiple tasks while demonstrating a high level of professionalism.
Maintains high‑level customer service while effectively communicating with persons in emergency situations.
Understands basic computer applications.
Works weekends and holidays on scheduled rotation.
Other duties as assigned by the department.
Minimum Qualifications
At least 18 years old.
Proof of a high school diploma or GED.
Successfully complete a computer‑aided pre‑interview test.
Clear communication via telephone and radio.
Ability to listen, talk, and type simultaneously.
Attendance bonus criteria as outlined in ERCC CBA.
