Position Summary The Clinical Laboratory Technologist works under general supervision and is responsible for complex laboratory procedures and handling all types of specimens submitted to the department for processing tasks assigned.

Responsibilities

Perform clinical laboratory tests proficiently in the department under general supervision and exercise independent judgment in the specialty assigned.

Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintain accurate and complete records of all testing performed on‑site.

Maintain records that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing, prepare clinical specimens for testing and identify specimen related problems according to established SOP guidelines.

Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures.

Review, release test results and follow department's procedures in reporting STATS or critical results to the interpreting physician per department SOP.

Perform and document quality control on reagents, equipment and assays. Recognize and act on QC failures by consultation or follow‑up with the department supervisor or lead technologist to achieve resolution.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Prepare stock solutions, reagents and cocktails used in the laboratory as per established SOPs. Test and evaluate them based on standard criteria and document all observed results.

Experience, Education and Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university preferred.

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences with at least one year of laboratory experience/training.

1+ year of equivalent experience (high complexity testing) preferred.

Certificate compliance requirements:

Nationally: ASCP certification for the assigned specialty, if available.

FL: current state license to perform laboratory testing = Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

CA: current state license to perform laboratory testing = Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist or Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist.

TN: current state license to perform laboratory testing = Medical Laboratory Professional.
