Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school AND at least 6 hours of college coursework.
Must have the appropriate required Teacher Assistant Credentials, NYS Teacher Assistant certification as it applies to this position.
Must have experience working with deaf students in an educational setting; AND experience working with students with special needs, autism, intellectual and/or emotional disabilities.
The ability to successfully complete a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at the proficiency level defined for each position as determined by SMSD OR The willingness to train toward successful completion of a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at the proficiency level defined for each position as determined by SMSD.
NOTE: The school may also require employees in this classification to complete successful training in behavior management programs including but not limited to TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) training will be provided by St. Mary's School for the Deaf.
Major Responsibilities
Assist in classroom management, teaching materials development, educational activities, and special duties as assigned.
Assist in the classroom under the Direction of the Teacher by assisting students individually and in small groups with homework, projects, etc.
May assist students with physical day-to-day activities including lifting multiply handicapped students to and from wheelchairs, toileting and changing diapers.
Assist in behavior management (as prescribed for each student) and discuss problems or changes with Teacher.
Assists with cafeteria and bus duty activities.
Assists in the preparation of teaching materials, which may include but is not limited to copying, gathering information, word processing, collating, pasting, and cutting materials.
Assists Teacher to ensure that school and safety rules are followed by students in and out of the classroom.
Accompanies students to Speech, Music, Art, Physical Education, and other activities that occur outside the classroom.
Accompanies students to outside campus for extended learning activities as directed by the department of education.
Capacity to substitute as a classroom teacher, when needed.
Intercedes in emergency situations as needed and necessary.
Attend departmental and staff mandatory meetings or other contractual or required by the school.
Perform other duties as assigned or as needed by the classroom teacher or supervisor.
