Overview
SUMMARY: Reports to the Ambulatory Clinical Manager and/or Practice Manager, or other assigned Supervisory personnel and under general supervision of the attending Licensed Independent Practitioner, and functions in accordance with established policies and procedures in an Ambulatory setting. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services aligned with Brown University Health's mission, values and life-span considerations. Responsibilities
Work effectively at the highest capabilities and training. Follow clinic/workflow protocols to maximize quality and efficiency. Perform pre-visit planning by reviewing/updating patient records with recent test results, consults, and correspondence; communicate point-of-care reminders to providers via the EMR. Prepare patients for examination and treatment according to clinic workflow; escort from waiting area to exam room; take vital signs; weigh patients; record in chart. Enter patient chief complaint, medication reconciliation, histories and other services as outlined in workflow protocol; document health concerns in EMR; record patient pain score; complete all questionnaires in the chart. Ensure patient flow throughout the practice; review Health Maintenance and Chronic Illness services per protocols/standing orders. Perform tests and point-of-care procedures (blood pressure, EKG, pulse oximetry, Hgb A1-C, glucose, urinalysis, urine hCG, rapid strep, and others) as directed by protocol. Record allergy information, medications, medical/surgical/family histories; initiate pharmacy benefits verification. Assist physician with physical examinations; perform procedures using aseptic techniques per standard procedures. Administer vaccines and place PPDs as per protocol. Complete appropriate follow-up after visits (labeling/sampling for labs, etc.) and ensure results are entered in EMR; track orders and results; contact patients for outreach/reminders; report abnormal lab results immediately. Follow up on referrals for specialty care and other services; track consult reports and update EMR; contact patients for outreach/reminders for referrals. Check for prescription refills pending; ensure exam rooms are cleaned between patients and prepared for next appointment. Explain programs, procedures and preparation for tests; educate patients on care coordination and emergency room prudent use; document identified barriers. Schedule tests and follow-up appointments; pre-register patients; verify demographics/insurance; obtain prior authorizations as needed. Monitor and order supplies; keep rooms stocked; clean medical equipment; report broken/missing equipment; ensure expiring medications are removed/reported. Assist with administrative duties; mail reminders and letters to patients. Manage time effectively; fill slow periods with preparatory activities; minimize non-productive time. Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control per hospital policies; protect patient privacy and confidentiality. Maintain team-oriented approach to patient care; support patient-centered medical home goals; remain flexible and willing to change. Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
BASIC KNOWLEDGE: High School graduate or equivalent; ability to read, write and speak English; Basic Life Support Certification required; completion of a medical assistant certification preferred. EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a formal medical assistant program or a minimum of 3 years of medical assistant experience required. Exceptions may be considered for applicants with at least three years of related experience in comparable roles (e.g., LPN, medical student, EMT, paramedic).
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Healthcare environment (acute care hospitals, physicians\' offices, and related healthcare settings). Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Hazards minimized by safety procedures; may require lifting up to 50 pounds and standing/walking intermittently.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay Range: $18.13-$29.90
