Overview Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University provides 24/7, year‑round veterinary care and has been a leader in advanced clinical practice, education, and research for over 30 years. The anesthesia service is comprised of four board certified anesthesiologists, two residents and eighteen talented technicians. Together they deliver high quality anesthesia care for a diverse caseload that includes routine to critical patients across small and large animal services

This position qualifies for a $2,000 sign on bonus following successful completion of 6 months of employment for newly hired employees.

The anticipated schedule will be a 3 day, 12 hour shift.

What You'll Do We are seeking an experienced and motivated Veterinary Technician III – Anesthesia to join our dynamic anesthesia team. In this advanced clinical role, you will not only provide high level technical support, you will also have a vital role in teaching and mentoring veterinary students, interns, residents, and fellow technicians in a collaborative academic environment. This position is ideal for a skilled anesthesia technician who enjoys clinical excellence, teaching, leadership, and professional growth in a fast‑paced tertiary care setting.

Essential Functions as a Vet Tech III in Anesthesia will be:

Clinical

Perform advanced anesthesia nursing and monitoring for small and large animal patients undergoing surgery, advanced imaging, and specialized procedures.

Monitor anesthesia parameters, accurately assess patient status, and communicate changes promptly to clinicians.

Implement treatment plans and respond appropriately to patient needs with limited direct supervision.

Assist with diagnostic testing, including bench top laboratory procedures.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless, high quality patient care.

Participate in small and large animal on‑call and emergency coverage rotations

Teaching

Provide hands on instruction in advanced and critical care anesthesia techniques for veterinary students, interns, residents, and technician students.

Support students' learning and professional development throughout anesthesia rotations.

Participate in departmental and hospital wide continuing education initiatives

Leadership

Mentor newly hired technicians and support onboarding in partnership with supervisory staff.

Demonstrate leadership, accountability, and professionalism in daily clinical operations.

Contribute to hospital wide initiatives such as training programs, externships, and mentorship efforts.

Departmental and Additional Responsibilities

Maintain anesthesia equipment, identify malfunctions, and coordinate servicing.

Ensure anesthesia areas are clean, stocked, and prepared for clinical use.

Provide shift or service coverage as needed across the hospital.

Complete special projects and additional duties as assigned.

Research

Assist with clinical research studies and projects, including anesthesia care for research animals when required.

What We're Looking For Basic Requirements

Certified Veterinary Technician (or CVT equivalent) in good standing

3 years of experience as a certified technician in anesthesia or a related specialty, preferably in a specialty or academic hospital

Strong knowledge of veterinary anesthesia, pharmacology, and medical terminology

Ability to independently initiate and perform CPR

Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

Demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, and lead other technicians and students

Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

3+ years of dedicated anesthesia experience in a high volume hospital (small and/or large animal)

Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS)-level anesthesia skill set

Experience in or interest in gaining experience in large animal anesthesia

RECOVER Certification

Demonstrated experience teaching technicians and veterinary students

Strong ability to remain calm, adaptable, and professional in a fast‑paced clinical environment

Pay Range Minimum $30.00, Midpoint $35.70, Maximum $41.40

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
