Dental Hygienist – Charlotte Community Health Clinic
The Charlotte Community Health Clinic (CCHC) is a non‑profit agency whose vision is to provide a healthy community where all individuals, regardless of ability to pay, will have access to comprehensive coordinated quality healthcare. The clinic provides quality, accessible primary care, behavioral health and dental services to pediatric and adult patients from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, including patients experiencing homelessness. CCHC works in partnership with other community‑based organizations to meet the needs of the medically underserved.
Job Summary Dental hygienists can handle regular cleanings and perform thorough exams on new and existing patients, assisting the dentist in treatment decisions. Key duties include taking x‑rays, educating patients on oral home care, and conducting regular screenings.
Responsibilities
Review oral health history and conduct initial mouth screening
Perform oral cancer screenings
Utilize state‑of‑the‑art technology: Itero, digital x‑rays, cone‑beam imaging, digital charting
Expose, develop, and mount dental radiographs
Perio charting on each new patient and annually
Follow ADHA perio guidelines, execute root planning and myofunctional evaluations
Administer nitrous oxide and oxygen as applicable
Takes impressions for diagnostic and opposing models
Educate patients on importance of preventive care and home care
Use Cavitron for scaling
Maintain detailed and organized patient charting
Prepare treatment rooms: set‑up, decontamination, sterilization, instrument sharpening, restock supplies
Charts, review medical history, review previous visit notes, place procedures based on recommendations, partner with CDHC on paperwork
Screen all patients for COVID‑19, take temperature, confirm medical history
Take appropriate x‑rays (Nomad, Dexis sensors)
Take intra‑oral photos (minimum 3 per patient)
Provide OHI, sealant placement, prophylaxis, scaler/cavitron use, fluoride placement, SDF as applicable
Motivational interviewing, caries risk assessment, goal setting for oral health (including parents)
Charting codes for all lesions, provide dietary and fluoride rinse recommendations, prepare chair and operatory with all supplies
Set up and remove barriers, adhere to infection control guidelines (CCHC/OHSA/ADA)
Dispose of oral hygiene aids, sterilize instruments, handle logs
Send thank‑you letters to schools/volunteers, stay in communication with school nurses, advocates, social workers, comply with HIPAA regulations
Education & Qualifications
Dental Hygiene certification from an accredited dental hygiene program
Current dental hygiene license in state of employment
Current BLS CPR certification
State practice act certifications as required
Annual OSHA, HIPAA and infection control training
