Department: Public Works – Highway Division Supervisor: Highway Supervisor Weekly Hours: 40 Hours/Week Bargaining Unit: Union – SEIU FLSA: Non-Exempt Hiring Conditions: Job Title & Pay Range Are Dependent Upon Licensure.

Licenses Required:

MA Class B CDL, MA Hoisting Licenses 1C, 2A, 3A, 4E, and 4G . Hourly Pay Range With All Required Licenses: $26.83 – $32.53. Minimal License:

MA Class D Driver’s License . Hourly Pay Range Without All Required Licenses: $25.49 – $31.02.

The Town of Shrewsbury is seeking multiple motivated and dependable Special Equipment Operators to join our Highway Division within the Department of Public Works, a team that plays a critical role in keeping our town safe, clean, and moving year round.

In this role, you’ll be on the front lines maintaining Shrewsbury’s roads, sidewalks, and drainage infrastructure. Your work will include operating loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, sweepers, and other specialized equipment; repairing catch basins; clearing storm drains; and responding to weather and emergency conditions. No two days are the same, and every task contributes to the quality of life for Shrewsbury residents, businesses, and visitors.

What You’ll Do

Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, snowplows, and other machinery used in highway maintenance and construction.

Perform road repairs, drainage installation, tree work, and storm cleanup.

Inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment, ensuring they are safe and ready to use.

Respond to public works and weather emergencies, including snow and ice operations.

Work collaboratively with contractors, residents, and other departments to complete public projects efficiently.

What We’re Looking For

High school diploma or equivalent.

Massachusetts Class D Driver's License, for Equipment Operator & Laborer positions.

Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), for Equipment Operator position.

Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License: 1C, 2A, 4E, 4G, for Equipment Operator position.

OSHA 10 Certification.

Experience in public works, construction, or heavy equipment operation preferred.

Strong knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction safety standards.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and respond to emergency calls as needed.

Compensation, Work Hours & Benefits This is a full‑time, benefited position within the Town’s Department of Public Works. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience & licensure in accordance with union agreements and Town policies.

The hours are conveniently 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, with overtime as required. A daily 30‑minute lunch is agreed upon by the Highway Supervisor.
